Reflexology for Premenstrual Syndrome: A Clinical Study on Symptom Relief

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a common condition affecting women during their reproductive years, characterized by a range of physical, emotional, and behavioral symptoms that occur in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. These symptoms can significantly impact daily life, including work, social interactions, and overall quality of life. The prevalence of PMS varies widely, with studies reporting rates between 7.1% and 99.5%, highlighting the need for effective management strategies.

This clinical trial investigates the effectiveness of reflexology, a complementary therapy, in alleviating PMS symptoms. Reflexology involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears, which are believed to correspond with different body organs and systems. The therapy aims to restore balance and promote healing. Participants in the reflexology group will receive eight sessions over two menstrual cycles, each lasting 30 minutes. The control group will receive no intervention.

The primary outcome measure is the reduction in PMS symptoms, assessed using the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale. Secondary outcomes include pain levels, measured with the Visual Comparison Scale, and quality of life, evaluated with the Quality of Life Scale. The study aims to provide evidence on whether reflexology can offer a non-pharmacological option for managing PMS symptoms.

Eligibility criteria include women aged 18 and older with regular menstrual cycles and no significant gynecological or psychiatric conditions. Exclusion criteria include pregnancy, use of hormonal contraception, and certain foot conditions that may contraindicate reflexology. The study is randomized and open-label, with a parallel assignment design.

Findings from this study could support the integration of reflexology into PMS management protocols, offering women a holistic approach to symptom relief. By addressing both physical and emotional symptoms, reflexology may improve overall well-being and quality of life for women experiencing PMS.
