Senior Backend Engineer

The Senior Backend Engineer is responsible for the development of AI Labs’ software applications. In this role, they will work closely with application engineers to architect, build, and optimize scalable and resilient data systems, to meet the growing needs of end users. They will write, test, and release back end code according to the product roadmap and release plans. They will work collaboratively with the Head of Machine Learning Product and software QA to set the overall goals and sprint plans.

Key Accountabilities:Collaborate with other engineers to design, implement, and document new software engineering techniques and strategiesDevelop back-end / server-side software to serve application requests, query databases, and format and deliver dataDesign and implement performant APIs between applications and our data warehouseSupport development of front-end software and user experiences using the latest application programming frameworks, libraries and languagesUnderstand customer, product and user requirements to develop, test, and ship software applications that meet their needsArchitect and contribute code to software infrastructureBuild internal frameworks, libraries, and infrastructure to improve software architecture and to allow for rapid prototyping and new product deliveryDesign high-quality, effective data stores to support our applicationsOwn complete life cycle of application databases for a product, from user management, DDL, permissions, performance tuning, and backupsCollaborate with data scientists, NLP engineers, clinical annotators, and product managers to build and maintain roadmap, and implement best practicesCreate and maintain application documentation to enable other engineers and data scientists to utilize the stackReview and improve the code of other engineers to enhance quality and securityWork with product management and quality assurance to test and validate completed features and bug fixes before deploying to the appropriate environmentsCreate unit tests, end to end tests, performance tests, and automated tests to ensure high code qualityContribute to Product and Customer Satisfaction • Collaborate with Product Management to define and implement features to satisfy customer and user requirementsPartner with other engineers to maintain quality work and anticipate problemsParticipate in sprint planning and check-in meetings to identify customer needs, potential roadblocks and solutionsBring new ideas to the table and foster a culture of continuous integrationQualificationsSkills:Strong CS fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and distributed systemsProficiency with PythonExperience with API development in Python Flask or similarBroad skillset with database technologies including ElasticSearch, Neo4j, and SQLAbility to monitor database uptime and performanceExcellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skillsA flexible attitude with respect to work assignments and new learning Ability to manage multiple and varied tasks with enthusiasm and prioritize workload with attention to detailWillingness to work in a matrix environment and to value the importance of teamwork.Knowledge and Experience: Experience designing and creating applications with RESTful JSON API endpointsHands on experience performing schema and data migrations in a multi-tenant environmentExperience with AWS and DockerExperience and/or interest in working with HIPAA-protected dataExperience with the following tools: JIRA, Confluence, Docker, Jenkins, Git, Github, Sumologic, AWS S3, AWS EC2, WhitesourceEducation:Educated to degree level in engineering or computer science or other relevant qualification/experience.EEO DisclaimerParexel is an equal opportunity employer.  Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to legally protected status, which in the US includes race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or protected veteran status.
