As an animal health technician, you’ll be responsible for the well-being of all our research animals. Your goal will be to ensure not only their health, but also their intellectual stimulation and any other type of enrichment. Your success will ensure the health and happiness of our animals, but also the integrity of our medical studies.  

  Tasks & Evolution  

FIRST YEAR – Supporting the health and well-being of our animals ($16.25/hour, plus $1,000 sign-on bonus, and $1,000 moving expenses)

•    Ensure that an adequate supply of food and water is always available for all animals  

•    Clean all types of animal housing and accessories  

•    Accompany the animals in their physical exercises and in their enrichment activities

•    Handle animals for any activity that requires it

•    Record computerized data and complete verification documents

•    Understand, adhere to, and apply Standard Organizational Procedures (SOPs)

•    Remove domestic and biomedical waste and dispose in appropriate containers. 

 

SECOND YEAR – Hands-on assistance in studies and scientific observation ($18.00/hour)

•    Observe, examine, and follow up on clinical signs in animals.  

•    Record animal weights and food intake. 

•    Perform intramuscular and subcutaneous injections of samples in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). 

•    Support the technicians during the different tests by immobilizing the animals.  

•    Fill syringes to be used for the study. 

•    Record computerized data and complete verification documents. 

•    Read and ensure understanding of study plans prior to the start of each study. 

 

THIRD YEAR – Full-blown animal health technician, performing medical techniques ($19.50/hour)

 

•    Administer test items and/or medications to animals (gavage, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous injections) 

•    Perform sample collection (urine, blood, cerebrospinal fluid). 

•    Use specialized equipment (pumps, ECG, BP machine). 

•    Demonstrate initiative and interest in new work techniques and in working with different animal species.

•    Observe, examine, and follow up on clinical signs of animals  Skills & Benefits  

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: 

 

•    Ability to maintain the regular physical effort required to lift, push, and move equipment and animals. 

•    High School Diploma 3. 

•    Experience working with animals is a plus. 

•    Ability to read and understand English. 

•    Ability to work in a team environment. 

•    Ability to manage time effectively. 

•    Ability to adapt to change. 

•    Flexibility to work a variety of hours including weekends, as well as the possibility of overtime evenings and nights as needed. 

•    Working knowledge of computer applications related to the position.

o    Starting: $16.25 / hour  

o    Weekend and Evening: $2.50/hr premium
