Job Summary Provide supervision of department personnel and oversee and conduct all aspects of NHP behavioral services at assigned site. Assist Manager, NHP Behavioral Management Services in the development and implementation of programs supporting research objectives while meeting regulatory requirements and industry standards for animal care, behavior and welfare.

 

Responsibilities:

Evaluate enrichment devices for animals’ structural and social environment and provide opportunities for species-typical activities.

Collaborate with the veterinary staff to evaluate and recommend improvements in animal care and behavioral standards to include implementation of programs and treatments for animals requiring special attention.

 Oversee and coordinate behavioral observations and reporting of behavioral abnormalities.

Perform, refine or develop behavioral assessments in response to reports of behavioral abnormalities.

Assist with providing guidance to site management in preparation for regulatory inspections; resolve audit findings and oversee client interactions regarding behavioral requirements.

Ensure effective communication, and training is maintained within the organization to facilitate and support proper animal care standards.

Ensure ordering of animal supplies and equipment is within the established budgetary guidelines.  May assist in the development and recommendation of departmental budget and authorize expenditures.

Oversee implementation of new or enhanced behavioral enrichment.

Oversee the implementation of departmental training programs, including orientation of new team members and annual animal welfare training.

Ensure adherence to pertinent regulatory requirements and to departmental policies, practices and procedures [SOPs, safety procedures and safety protocols].

Participate in interviewing and selection of non-exempt personnel.  Recom­mend personnel actions, including hiring, promotions and raises.  Partner with Human Resources and depart­mental management to assist in the handling of disciplinary issues.  Draft appropriate personnel actions.

  Job Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in a related field.

Experience:  Four (4) years related experience in laboratory animal resources. Experience working directly with NHPs.  Experience working in a GLP and/or regulatory controlled environment required.  Prior supervisory/management experience preferred.

Certification/Licensure : AALAS LATG certification required. AALAS Certified Manager of Animal Resources certification (CM/CMAR) or equivalent preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

Other: Knowledge and understanding of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP’s) and federal regulations/guidelines relating to the care of laboratory animals including facility inspection, procurement and distribution of laboratory animals. Knowledge and understanding of animal care and welfare standards as defined by AAALAC, USDA, etc. Computer literate. Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills. Strong management, organizational, and communication skills. Experience with Enos database is a plus.
