Job Summary

Explora BioLabs, an entity of Charles River is seeking an Animal Care and Breeding Technician II located in La Jolla, CA. 

The Animal Care and Breeding Technician II is at the forefront of projects focused on rodent breeding programs, ensuring compliance with SOPs, animal husbandry standards, quality standards, customer expectations, production goals.  This role is responsible for ensuring all members of the breeding team are trained and acta a technical advisor.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists team supervisor with the conduct of a needs assessment and to identify training needs by evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of animal breeding technicians.
  • Develop a training plan with consultation of team lead and manager, that meets the needs of the breeding program.
  • Evaluate Animal Technician technical performance.
  • Ensures implementation of all current SOPs.
  • Assists with weekly scheduling and assign daily tasks to team members as needed.
  • Manage commercial rodent production, standard and transgenic breeding colonies.
  • Provide sampling for rodent genotyping.
  • Reserve, select and accurately pack animals for customer orders following established shipping procedures.
  • Perform routine animal health observations.
  • Maintains quality performance of services within client expectations including meeting/exceeding standards with regards to animal health and welfare.
  • Responsible for accurate computer records of mouse colonies.
  • Monitors genomic conformance to breeding standards.
  • Participates in new staff recruitment and interviews.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 1 - 3 years of experience as an animal breeding technician

Preferred Experience:

  • Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school or BS in related field preferred
  • AALAS Certification preferred

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekends if necessary
  • Must be willing to work with infectious biologics (BSL-2 conditions)
  • Must be willing to work with animals

Physical Requirements:

  • Dexterity of physical condition to operate all job duties; lift and move objects regularly throughout the shift
  • Work in a standing position requiring bending and stretching of arms and legs throughout regular work shift
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

The pay range for this position is $24-26 per hour. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
