  Job Summary We are seeking an Animal Support Technician 2 for our Insourcing Solutions division to provide continuing support services to our Charles River clients throughout the New England area where you're assigned to various sites based upon need. The AST2 home base is in Cambridge, MA. This is a Full-Time position, with paid holidays and a wonderful benefits package. This position is offering a $2K signing bonus, with an hourly rate of $26.00.

 

The following are responsibilities related to the Animal Support Tech 2:

 

The AST2 will learn, train and support cagewash and animal care processes, to include monitor animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations and animal husbandry duties to include: performing daily equipment checks; providing appropriate food and water; performing cage changing and/or cage cleaning; recording animal health concerns. Provide environmental enrichment appropriate to species. These experiences may involve a variety of lab animal species. May be tasked to assist with breeding and weaning procedures to ensure appropriate production levels. 

 

May be tasked to assist with administrative needs including cage card management, perform data entry and review, manage census data. Attend and participate in on-the-job and classroom training sessions and complete all assigned computer-based safety and professional development training. Provide procedural mentoring to other staff as instructed by Facility Supervisor or Manager.

 

Ability to perform or obtain competency in routine technical procedures as required, such as body weights, food and water intake measurements, animal identification (e.g., ear tagging), tissue collection, dosing administration (SC, IP, PO). Perform health surveillance sample collections.   Perform surgical preparation, anesthesia administration and monitoring and post-surgical observations and associated record keeping. 

 

Promptly report facility deficiencies and help formulate a resolution. Initiates action to replenish stock by promptly informing the Facility Supervisor of increase or decrease of consumable levels and completing other related paperwork, receives, unpacks, and delivers goods; re-stocks items as necessary; labels shelves. Inspect all equipment for proper operating conditions and report any defects. Ensure proper maintenance of animal records including, room logs, cage card labels, autoclave records, animal census and other records as required. Under the guidance of supervisor, create the husbandry work schedule for the daily cage changing procedures as well as the additional duty assignments. 

 

Work Schedule: Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday 7:00AM-4:00PM Job Qualifications The following are minimum qualifications related to the AST2 position: Education:  High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.). Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Animal Science, Life Sciences or related discipline preferred. Experience:   One to two years related laboratory/research animal husbandry and basic technical experience (dosing/tissue collection) in a laboratory animal facility. Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the ALAT level; LAT preferred. An equivalent combination of education, experience and certifications may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above. Other (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):  Ability to effectively follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to effective communication and that contribute to a congenial work environment. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner with coworkers, research staff, client and managers. Strong organization skills and attention to detail. Strong written and verbal English communication skills. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to organize and prioritize multiple responsibilities and function independently, as well as within a team environment, with minimal supervision. Ability to effectively resolve problems or issues by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, and industry regulations.
