Job Summary We are seeking an Animal Care Technician 4/Lead Technician for our Insourcing Solutions client in Framingham, MA.  The candidate will provide oversight and support to the animal care program and the animal care technicians under the direction of the on-site facility manager.

 

Position includes a $2,000 sign on bonus

 

The essential duties for the Animal Care Technician/Lead Technician are:

 

Responsible for creating and maintaining daily scheduling for Charles River technicians.

•    Manage /reassign staff schedules due to illness, vacations or emergencies

•    Point of Contact for all schedule changes for CRL staff

•    Understands cage counts, census, and metrics for allocating work to technicians

•    Manages compliance rounds, including weekly walk-throughs, assigning tasks to be addressed, follow-up on completion, and trending for management team

•    Responsible for leading, organizing, implementing husbandry, cage wash, and animal receiving tasks

•    Performs animal care and husbandry tasks, including cagewash

•    Assist in the scheduling of Microbial testing and Water Quality testing

•    Serve as liaison between CR personnel and management

•    Develop an understanding of and regularly utilize available information resources and systems (e.g., SOPs, policies, computer applications). Review, comprehend and comply with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area.

•    Conduct laboratory procedures in compliance with established protocols/plans and with regulatory and laboratory requirements.

•    Schedule and oversee breeding protocols and program activities; production levels, determine culls, assigning animals to study, updating IACUC protocols.

•    Perform matings, weans, various neonate identifications and any activity assigned to breeding projects,

•    Provide health monitoring and disease model scoring. 

•    Working knowledge of strains, nomenclature and genetics.

•    Monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations. Perform animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include: perform daily water bottle /automatic water line and cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.

•    Assist with restraint, handling and manipulation of various animal species as assigned 

•    Interact with other personnel within the department, key support groups and the division, to develop a network of resources to facilitate completion of assignments.

•    Good communication and interpersonal skills

•     Maintain required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.

•    Provide leadership and guidance to the husbandry staff on operations and facility issues.  Specific responsibilities include investigating operational issues, including gathering information and details, compiling the information, and submitting/presenting it along with recommendation(s) for resolution of the situation/issue to the Operations manager.  Provide training to new hires in the duties and responsibilities of animal care and facility operations.  

  Job Qualifications

Education:  Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in Animal Science or related discipline.

•    Experience:  3 years related experience working  in a laboratory animal facility

•    Familiarity with the workings and supplies used in a lab animal faciltiy

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

•    Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the ALAT

•    Other:  Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of employee and client records.
