  Job Summary  

The Senior Director, Cloud Computing will be responsible for overseeing the execution of the Cloud Acceleration Strategy. Charles River Labs has adopted a cloud-first mindset to leverage the scale, security, and advanced technologies the cloud provides. Charles River Labs would like to accelerate the journey to the cloud to implement more modern technical capabilities, capitalize on new business opportunities, capture efficiency gains, reduce data center footprint, reduce of end-of-life technology and enable the deployment of our healthcare business solutions. 

 

The candidate should have a proven track record of strategy development and execution. This role requires a unique individual with a broad range of technical skills from infrastructure to applications as well as strong leadership capabilities. Outcomes directed by this role will have a significant impact on the organization's short and long-term results and strategic business objectives.  This leader will ensure that we are effectively and repeatably building out our cloud portfolio and meeting or exceeding quality and performance expectations.

  Duties and Responsibilities

•    Demonstrate advanced knowledge of cloud architecture and implementation processes (OS, multi-tenancy, virtualization, orchestration, elastic scalability, disaster recovery, security)

•    Act as a Subject Matter Expert to the organization for end-to-end cloud service enablement, including AWS, Azure and future providers

•    Develop knowledge of internal customer business objectives, and maps this to appropriate cloud design requirements

•    Develop a library of deployable and documented cloud design patterns, based on the application portfolio, as a basis for deploying services to the cloud

•    Design, deliver and manage cloud environments through automation (IaC) best practices

•    Demonstrate leadership ability to back decisions with research and the "why," and articulate several options, the pros and cons for each, and a recommendation

•    Maintain overall industry knowledge on latest trends, technology, etc.

•    Develop architecture solutions and evaluate alternatives for private, public and hybrid cloud models, including laaS, PaaS, and other cloud services

•    Define optimal design patterns and solutions for high availability and disaster recovery for applications

•    Ensure delivered solutions meet/perform to technical and functional/non-functional requirements

•    Provide technical expertise and ownership in the diagnosis and resolution of an issue, including the determination and provision of workaround solution or escalation to service owners

•    Ensure delivered solutions are realized in time frame committed; work in conjunction with project sponsors to size and manage scope and risk

•    Provide support and technical governance, expertise related to cloud architectures, deployment, and operations

•    Provide thought leadership in industry and to fellow team members across business and technical project dimensions solving complex business requirements

•    Demonstrate forward thinking around where the organization is going and how technology can support these efforts

•    Advocate and define cloud architecture vision from a strategic perspective, including internal and external platforms, tools, and systems

•    Develop business case, including ROI and TCO analysis

•    Assist with managing our cloud “spend” (FinOps) and make recommendations for cost savings opportunities

•    Recommendations to strategic plans and reviews for Cloud adaption across the organization; preparing and completing action plans; implementing production and quality standards; resolving problems; identifying trends; determining system improvements; implementing change.

•    Act as the coach and mentor to team members and technical staff on their assigned project tasks

•    Responsible for personnel management activities such as: scheduling, personnel actions (hiring, promotions, transfers, etc.), training and development, providing regular direction and feedback on performance, disciplinary actions and preparing and delivering annual performance and salary reviews.

•    Integrate activities with those of other major organizational units (e.g., segments, departments, functions).

•    Recommend departmental budget and authorize expenditures.

•    Develop and oversee the implementation of departmental training programs, including orientation.

•    Support the policy of equal employment opportunity through affirmative action in personnel actions. Job Qualifications  

•    Bachelor's degree in computer science, systems analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience

•    10+ years of experience with infrastructure and cloud environments

•    8+ years of experience spanning following IT disciplines; technical architecture, network management, application development, middleware, database management, security, run-time operations

•    8+ years of managing technical people and teams

•    Extensive experience implementing solutions within AWS, Azure or other leading cloud service providers

•    Experience migrating legacy workloads from data center to cloud service provider (lift & shift, re-platform)

•    Experience delivering cloud native solutions for net-new products

•    Architect certifications from leading Cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP)

•    Experience with Infrastructure as Code best practices for cloud environments

•    Strong understanding of network architecture and application development methodologies

•    Strong understanding of SOA, object-oriented analysis and design, and/or client/server systems

•    Experience delivering projects through an agile framework

•    Experience working in a research environment preferred

•    Possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to communicate up through senior leadership

•    Should have experience in providing technical guidance to staff and perform reviews 

•    Should possess good communication and problem-solving skills.

•    Demonstrate teamwork, positive attitude and good rapport with peers and customers.
