Director, Global Capital Planning & Contractor Safety

Job Summary

Leads and develops the implementation of safety and sustainability strategy into the global capital planning and delivery including contractor management. Provides technical support and expertise to evaluate the organization’s end to end process for capital vendor selection, capital planning and execution risk profile. The role will work with the facility support team, business unit, site operations and other stakeholders to evaluate existing and future opportunities to deliver best in class capital projects. Contributes to global EHS&S team to ensure capital planning and delivery including contractor safety management are integrated into team’s strategic initiatives and risks are appropriately managed and compliance is maintained.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Act as an SME (Subject Matter Expert) in safety and sustainability for capital planning team on topics related to engineering, equipment, contractors, and capital project management.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and capital planning team following best practices for safety sustainability from conception, design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and final handover. 
  • Manage numerous projects (from small to large) in tandem and ensure that internal and external resources are aligned, and projects completed in priority order.
  • Leverage data analysis, software systems available and industry best practices to help identify, support, and promote safety improvements, energy & water reduction ideas and initiatives for consideration.
  • Develop end to end safety and sustainability process to be included in capital stage gate process.
  • Create and lead company’s contractor safety program including the evaluation and approval of contractor safety procedures.
  • Review Engineer Designs to ensure that engineered solutions in alignment with EHS&S Guidelines are incorporated in the project scope, design and implementation.
  • Track and report to the management teams on progress against related KPI’s and the glidepath for achieving our goals with capital stage gate process. 
  • Work with capital, engineering, and site teams to identify and implement projects that improve safety and sustainability at the facility. 
  • Liaise with equipment end users and affected departments to gather design and function requirements with respect to productivity, safety, and sustainability, for inclusion within the project plan.
  • Work with capital procurement team to evaluate, develop and implement safety and sustainability into vendor selection and prequalification for capital and construction projects.
  • Ensure that all project related work is carried out on time, to budget, is "fit for purpose" and delivers to the highest standard and current best practice. Ensure customer requirements are not only met in full but aim to exceed.
  • Work independently on individual projects and part of the Project team on group projects.
  • Work with Project Management team to include justification for safety and sustainability integration including value engineering into major and minor capital projects.
  • Compile and share best practices within the organization and across functional groups. 
  • Lead cross-functional / multi departmental teams in the completion of project works.
  • Support the global and site/business unit EHS&S team with a variety of EHS&S programmatic areas.

Job Qualifications

⦁    Education:  Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental or safety sciences or similar discipline required. Graduate degree in engineering a plus. ⦁    Experience:  10 + years full-time experience in capital planning or engineering for academia, pharmaceutical R&D, biotechnology, or life sciences companies, with at least 2 years’ experience in leading a global/multi-site safety management program. ⦁    Certification/Licensure:  Professional Engineer, Certified Safety Professional or equivalent preferred.   ⦁    Other:  Expert level knowledge and application of safety and sustainability capital program development, risk assessments, and local/country regulatory agency requirements. Must be computer literate (Microsoft Office software). Proven ability to navigate in a highly matrixed environment and influence others without direct authority.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: ⦁    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear and work/type at a computer.   ⦁    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to adjust focus, distance vision, color vision and peripheral vision. ⦁    Required to occasionally stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects and reach with hands and arms.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT: ⦁    General office working conditions, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

Comments: ⦁    This position requires frequent domestic and occasional international travel.

Compensation Data

The pay range for this position is $175,000 to $200,000. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, and location.
