Principal Engineer Architect

ROLE SUMMARY

This individual contributor position is within the Analytics Center of Excellence (ACOE) department of the Research & Development Solutions org (RSDIT) is responsible for guiding our technical strategy and assisting engineering teams in achieving that strategy.

Success in this individual contributor role takes many forms.  As one of our most senior engineers, this role will create and lead work across multiple engineering disciplines: software engineering, site reliability engineering, and test engineering.  A person in this role will meet frequently with stakeholders, product managers, engineering managers, data scientists, and other individual contributor engineers to understand a wide array of technical and business impacting variables, and distill these into strategic and tactical choices that our engineering teams will use to develop and improve software products for our customers.  A person in this role will also regularly mentor junior and senior engineers, sharing best practices and learning together across all disciplines of our work.  This role includes some opportunities for prototyping new approaches, but writing code is not the core focus of this role – instead, this role is expected to be a “force multiplier”, enabling their engineering peers to achieve their full potential.  The person in this role will evangelize best practices for software engineering including design, development, and lifecycle maintenance, and will partner with multiple software engineering teams to encourage practices like code reusability / shared libraries, responsive UIs, and a culture of continuous improvement.

We expect the person coming into this role to have multiple years of successful hands-on software development experience with the technologies we use, including Kubernetes, JavaScript, Python 3.x, and React.  The person coming into this role must have hands-on experience with software testing tools and strategies.  A successful candidate for this role will have a well-developed intuition crossing all layers of the software stack and inclusive of multiple engineering disciplines.  A candidate that has experience with data science or machine learning in addition to these engineering experiences is a plus – but data science and machine learning are not substitutes for core engineering experience.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

* Consult senior-level stakeholders within and outside the ACOE organization

* Together with senior engineers, match business needs with functional

requirements and assess the business impact of technical choices

* Together with product managers, identify the impact of business

requirements on technical requirements and delivery effort/timelines

* Advise ACOE engineering managers and individual contributors on best practices and standards for selection, implementation, and support of engineering technologies

* Mentor junior and senior software engineers

* Advise engineering teams on architecture approaches

* Research current and emerging technologies

* Learn ACOE’s products and operating environments, identify opportunities for improvement, and build consensus among ACOE engineering leadership and individual contributors to achieve those goals

* Proactively identify and propose solutions for business-impacting technical challenges

* Encourage cross-domain collaboration among engineers and engineering managers in multiple disciplines (software engineering, test engineering, and site reliability engineering)

* From time to time, contribute to development of prototypes of new products and features

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

* Prior experience in senior engineer, staff engineer, principal engineer, or senior principal engineer roles

* Led projects with teams of peers (peer leadership/influence, not HR management authority)

* Used/consumed APIs made by others

* Used CI/CD commit, test, deploy tools

* Implemented and supervised version control strategies

* Developed object-oriented software using Python 3.x

* Developed object-oriented software using JavaScript (ES5/6 or ES2015+)

* Designed and developed Microservices and APIs

* Developed software for container environments

* Deployed software into AWS or Azure

* Deployment automation using Terraform

* Deployed software into Kubernetes containers

* Strong verbal and written communication abilities

* Clear understanding of business operations

* Ability to blend business and technical inputs

* Prior experience working in a collaborative Agile environment

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

These additional qualifications are not required.  However, having any of the qualifications listed below will strengthen a candidate’s application.

* Prior experience as a product manager

* Prior experience as a team manager (with HR authority)

* Prior experience building, testing, and deploying machine learning models

* Prior experience building systems involving regulated data

* Awareness of infosec compliance factors in software development

* Knowledge of clinical domain and relevant compliance requirements

* Prior completion of an ABET accredited BS Computer Science degree
