The GEMS Embryology department is looking for an Embryology Technologist / Microinjectionist. The Technologist, under general supervision, will perform all aspects of model creation of rodents using a variety of methods including pronuclear, CRISPR, 8 cell and blastocyst microinjections and or/electroporation. The individual will need to inject embryos and conduct surgical embryo transfer of injected embryos into recipient mice and rats. Duties would include preparation microinjection needles, cell culture, schedule of microinjections, assist with collection of embryos, and ordering of supplies. Other responsibilities may sometimes include the ability to maintain and monitor the production of embryos via in vitro. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Experience in performing microinjection procedures for both embryonic stem (ES) cells both at the 8 cell and blastocyst stage. Experience in CRISPR microinjection. Electroporation of embryos is desired. Conduct embryo transfer (oviductal/uterine) using aspect surgical techniques. Collection of embryos from oviduct and uterine tissue from naturally mated rodents. Generate rodent embryos using IVF technology. Collection of spermatozoa from rodents for routine sperm cryopreservation. Collection of embryos from IVF and natural mating for routine embryo cryopreservation. Conduct QC procedure for cryopreserved material. Maintain cryo-inventory and ensure maintenance of cryo storage units. Experience performing animal husbandry using gnotobiotic isolators, including monitoring animal’s food, water and bedding conditions. Introduction into gnotobiotic isolators basic husbandry supplies including food, cages, bedding, water and environmental enrichment. Comfortable handling rodents (mice and rats), including restraining of animals for collection of fecal pellets, ear/tail sampling as well as tagging animals for identification. Must be comfortable performing mouse/rat health checks and interacting with veterinary staff as necessary. Assist supervisors with mentoring and training of new personnel. May act as team leader in specific departmental projects. Understand and comply with all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Strictly follow all biosecurity procedures necessary to maintain isolator integrity and animal health status, including the proper sterilization and entry of supplies/animals into gnotobiotic isolators. Ensure proper record-keeping and report preparation; ensure data entry into Internet Colony Management (ICM). Ensure compliance with all local, state and federal laws governing the use of research animals. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed. Ability to maintain detailed records and observations. Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance. Excellent organization skill and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work. Weekends and holidays may be required. Perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures. General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases and other applications. Perform all other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate degree (A.A. /A.S.) or higher degree equivalent in Biological Science, Lab Animal Science or related discipline. 2 years related experience and/or training. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above. Proficient in computers (ie: MS Office Suite and knowledge of databases). Must possess a high level of initiative and ability to work with little supervision. Broad knowledge of biology laboratory practices. Knowledge and experience in rodent disease models.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree. AALAS certification at the ALATG or above.
