The following are responsibilities related to theVeterinary Technician 3 position: Works closely with Clinical Veterinarian(s) to perform daily health assessments of laboratory animals in the colony. Provides animal treatments as instructed by Clinical Veterinarian(s). Performs technical functions required by research protocols, such as daily clinical observations and health examinations of sick animals, prior to reporting adverse findings to Clinical Veterinarian. Coordinate and schedule in house animal sampling (blood and tissue removal) as part of the internal health surveillance program. Submit DVR requisitions and schedule transportation of specimens Provides technical support, e.g. animal handling and restraint, weaning, tail snips, ear tagging, blood and other tissues sample collection, injections, treatments, surgical preparation, pre-, peri-, and post-operative observations, euthanasia and assisting with research procedures as directed. Veterinary Technician 3 Instruct the Animal Handling and Restraint class for investigator staff. Performs inventory to assist with the ordering, receipt, stocking, and maintenance of supply inventories. Perform peripheral venous catheterization on large animal models. Assist with anesthesia induction and anesthesia monitoring, with a proven ability to set up and troubleshoot non-re-breathing and re-breathing anesthesia circuits. Provides training to staff and customers as directed. Actively interacts with customers as required to resolve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints and to provide technical assistance. Prepares and submits written reports, charts, and logs as requested. Veterinary Technician 3 Maintains complete and accurate records of animal clinical cases as required by Institute and facility. Provides quality assurance for various aspects of the project, including animal health surveillance, clinical cases, autoclave monitoring (Hy-Check), monitoring of incoming animal shipments for container integrity and animal health. May be required to perform a variety of detailed technical tasks and procedures relating to the cryopreservation and re-derivation of customer’s animal (mouse) colonies including: timed-administration of super ovulatory hormones and checking vaginal plugs. Responsible for the maintenance of the recipient animal colony. May be required to collect embryos and sperm, perform embryo manipulation(s), cryopreservation of samples, in vitro fertilization and proper handling and usage of liquid nitrogen (LN2). Veterinary Technician 3 May be required to perform basic surgeries, including ovariectomy, vasectomy and embryo transfer, and tumor removal. Monitors environmental parameters and maintains written records, including room temperatures, light cycles, and sanitation. Reports problems to the building maintenance department. Operates equipment and uses supplies according to safety guidelines; performs general housekeeping and adheres to safety procedures. Complies with safety policies and procedures and SDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances. Maintains required attendance level and adheres to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed. Performs other duties as assigned. Job Qualifications The following are minimum qualifications related to theVeterinary Technician 3 position:

Education & Experience

BS degree in biology, animal science, or similar field OR AA OR 5 years experience as a technologist; supervisory experience desirable.

Certification/Licensure:

Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) within six months of entering position.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
