We are seeking an Electron Microscopy Technician 3 for our Safety Assessment site located in Durham, NC.

The Electron Microscopy Technician 3 will independently perform basic to advanced electron microscopy sample preparation, participate in the documentation of all activities and review of data, train less experienced electron microscopy technicians, and monitor and report process improvements, including review and revision of technical SOPs and forms.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  Independently trim tissue and process and embed both viral and tissue specimens Prepare solutions/reagents, cut thick/thin sections on the ultramicrotome, and stain slides/grids Examine samples on the transmission electron microscope (TEM), performing particle counts per SOPs, and take select images Examine tissue samples on the TEM working closely with the project pathologist, and take select pictures/images Change filaments in the transmission electron microscopes as needed Process specimens for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and oversee microscopist Write draft/final study reports as required Communicate with clients on technical issues Understand and conduct all processes in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations, corporate Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and the protocol May serve as Study Director or Principal Investigator serving as the single point of control for a specific in-house study and as such is responsible for the overall technical conduct of the study Train less experienced technicians Monitor and report process improvements.  Review and revise technical SOPs and forms Review documentation of functions performed as part of quality control requirements Job Qualifications   Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in biology or related discipline 5 years related experience in electron microscopy An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above. Valid driver’s license required.  EMT (MSA) certification preferred but not required Placement at this level requires successful completion/competency of the required tasks of the position preceding this level and continued ability to perform those tasks are required. Must be able to perform effectively as a team member, accurately record data, follow verbal and written instructions, maintain a positive work atmosphere, communicate effectively, and interact in a professional manner with management, coworkers, and sponsors.  Able to work independently.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time while performing laboratory tasks Frequently required to walk, sit, stand, reach with hands and arms, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls Regularly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer Regularly uses close vision and the ability to adjust focus and detect and differentiate colors Must regularly communicate with employees/customers

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  General laboratory working conditions Work in a dark room May work in a chemical fume hood Regularly wears protective clothing (cap, gloves, scrubs, lab coat, and safety glasses) Regularly works with or near toxic or caustic chemicals Frequently works with biohazards Frequently is exposed to unpleasant odors The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate

 

COMMENTS: This position requires occasional local travel to academic or research institutions to use off-site electron microscopes.
