Supervise a team of research staff and associated operations. Coordinate projects and work closely with other groups to ensure studies are completed in a timely manner while meeting the needs of the clients. 

 

The following are responsibilites related to the Research Supervisor position: Manage activities of assigned group(s) to ensure optimum performance of the group/function. Assess work volume; assign projects and guide laboratory activities. Ensure compliance with departmental policies, practices, and procedures (e.g., SOPs, protocols). Act as liaison between technical staff, internal departments, and study directors for all aspects of assigned studies. Collaborate with senior research staff on the development and validation of new models. Coordinate study scheduling with Study Directors, research technicians, and the other support lab groups. Coordinate projects for studies for team clients; provide input for study refinement to senior research staff. Conduct independent scientific research; perform data analysis & study design. Evaluate methods and materials used in technical processes for time efficiency/cost effectiveness.  Develop new procedures when warranted. Ensure optimum performance of group function.  Recommend and implement techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain state-of-the-art practices Identify critical project-related issues and successfully implement plans to overcome Provide leadership and support to technical staff in the solution of specific project-related problems. Provide hands on assistance to research staff as needed. Design and implement new methods & processes to solve project-related problems (i.e., task coordination, innovation, methodology, resource sharing, brainstorming, etc.). Act as a consultant on technical issues & provide innovative project-related solutions. Work with facility manager and EH&S to maintain a safe and high-quality laboratory environment. Responsible for personnel management activities such as: scheduling, personnel actions (hiring, promotions, transfers, etc.), training and development, providing regular direction and feedback on performance, disciplinary actions and preparing and delivering annual performance and salary reviews. Assist in the development of short- and long-range operating objectives, organizational structure, staffing requirements and succession plans. Develop and oversee the implementation of departmental training programs, including orientation. Assist in the interview and selection of qualified non-exempt personnel.  Recom¬mend personnel actions, including hiring, promotions and raises.  Partner with Human Resources and depart¬mental management to assist in the handling of disciplinary issues.  Draft appropriate personnel action paperwork.   Job Qualifications The following are minimum qualifications related to the Research Supervisor position:

 

Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in biology or related field required.  Master’s degree (M.A./M.S.) preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years progressive experience in an industry-based research lab, including 1 year supervisory experience. Preferred: progressive experience in a cancer research organization, previous experience working with laboratory animals and previous experience leading a laboratory animal research team. 

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

Certification/Licensure:  None.

Other:  Excellent judgment, decision-making, training/mentoring skills and verbal/written communication skills. Strong leadership and organizational skills. Able to prioritize workload and manage multiple tasks. Advanced chemistry and math knowledge/skills.
