We are seeking anexperiencedResearch Scientist I for our Microbial Solutions sitein Newark, DE.

The Research Scientist I will beresponsible for contributing to the scientific growth of the Accugenix® business. They will be the primary developer of the reference libraries for improving performance, accuracy, precision, and robustness of the Accugenix identification platforms including, but not limited to, 16S and ITS2 rDNA Sanger sequencing, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and protein-coding gene sequencing.

The following are responsibilities related to the Research Scientist 1 position:

•Curate, test and document new or modified library entries for Accugenix supported bacterial and fungal libraries following approved SOPs.

•Follow IJSEM and other journals for the publication of new species of interest. When new organisms are found, check to see if they represent new valid species that could be included in the library.

•Maintain Accugenix type strain culture collection used in library development and testing.

•Evaluate alternative protein-coding sequencing targets for species/subspecies ID and for strain typing.

•Participate in the development of alternative approaches to new or modified assays that will lead to improved performance and quality and can be effectively automated.

•Evaluate feasibility of alternative approaches, and with the management team, select approach that shows the most promise considering potential for improvement, material and labor cost of assay, time to final customer report and development expenses and time.

•Develop selected approach further by evaluating robustness, tradeoffs, and design process steps; test with known strains and customer samples and write development report detailing benefits and costs of implementing in the lab.

•Collaborate with lab manager to implement new or modified library development processes, corresponding assays, provide sources of new materials, SOPs, training and any other support needed to install and validate the change.

•Provide technical training to customers as needed.

•Represent company as a speaker at customer sites, seminars and conferences.

•Provide support for trouble shooting identification report issues and to data review and customer support for the interpretation of customer sample results.

•Provide support for trouble shooting assay related problems related to sequencing and MALDI.

•May supervise direct reports and be responsible for personnel management activities such as: scheduling, personnel actions (hiring, promotions, transfer, etc.), training and development, providing regular direction and feedback on performance, disciplinary actions and preparing and delivering annual performance and salary reviews.

•Observe established safety guidelines and maintain effectiveness of the department.

•Adhere to work procedures and processes that support company and departmental standards, procedures and strategic directives.

•Ensure that all regulatory and GMP compliance requirements are met and adhered to in the development process.

•Perform all other related duties as assigned. Qualifications

Ph.D. in Microbiology, Molecular Biology or related discipline preferred. M.S. in Microbiology, Molecular Biology or related discipline may be considered. One or more years of related laboratory experience in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or related field post completion of Ph.D., or five or more years of related experience post completion of M.S degree. Specific experience in bacterial and/or fungal taxonomy, molecular systematics, microbial identification, Sanger sequencing, and/or MALDI-TOF is required. Knowledge of bioinformatics tools is a plus.
