Data Science and AIML Communications Expert

IQVIA Holdings Inc.

London, United Kingdom

We are looking for an experienced data science technical writer to join our London-based team and to represent our technology and our research to our clients, the academic community and the public.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in one of the world's leading human data science teams working with Real World Insights to help our clients answer specific questions globally, make more informed decisions and deliver results.

Data Science Writer

AI & Machine Learning Solutions, Real World Solutions (RWS)

This high-profile team work on ground-breaking problems in health outcomes across disease areas including Ophthalmology, Oncology, Neurology, Chronic diseases (such as diabetes), and a variety of very rare conditions. The team works hand-on-hand with Statisticians, Epidemiologists and disease area experts across the wider global Real World Solutions group, leveraging a vast variety of anonymous patient-level information. The data encompasses IQVIA’s access to over 530 million anonymised patients as well as bespoke, custom partnerships with healthcare providers and payers.

The role

You’re a data scientist, but are you also the next David Attenborough or Neil deGrasse Tyson? Do your friends and family turn to you to explain complex topics like cancer research or the coronavirus? Do you know how to turn blank, confused stares into the appreciative grin of understanding? The primary focus of this role is to publish content to represent the work of the team. This would include research papers submitted to high impact journals, and more informal content for general consumption, for example blog posts or vlogs. There will also be more typical data scientist responsibilities, including working with very large datasets, high performance modelling, understanding the very complex medical domain to predict answers to healthcare challenges, and working closely with both technical and non-technical team members. There will also be the opportunity to participate in academic conferences. The ability to learn extremely fast and rapidly build skills in cutting-edge technologies is essential. You will be operating outside of your comfort zone – creativity and an innovative spirit will serve you well.

At IQVIA we appreciate and nurture individual talent. Therefore, the exact blend of responsibilities and individual career development will in part depend on the skill set and aspirations of the successful candidate.

Our ideal candidate: Experience

  • This role will involve a lot of technical writing and you should be able to show experience of engaging an audience. A strong academic publication history is a must, but do you also blog, tweet, or have a YouTube channel?

  • You will also need to be an experienced data scientist with a history of working with predictive models on very large datasets.

  • PhD in either Machine Learning, Computer Science, Physics, Bioinformatics or similar

  • Analytical experience within a top academic or commercial organisation where data-led problem solving was core part of the role.

  • Experience with the design and delivery of advanced machine learning projects in either academic or commercial settings.
  • A proactive, innovative and pragmatic approach to problem solving and an ability to think critically and independently, able to work as part of a cross-functional team.

Our ideal candidate: Tech Skills

  • This role will involve working with the Python programming language and the typical data science stack. Experience in R or Julia will also be useful.
  • Good knowledge of supervised machine learning methods, particularly tree classifiers (e.g. XGBoost, LightGBM), etc. from Python libraries.
  • Good knowledge of deep learning methods, such as convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, reinforcement learning on structured datasets such as medical records.
  • Experience with Neural Network libraries (e.g. TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch).
  • Experience with software development lifecycle.
  • Good programming skills in Python.
  • Understanding of what it takes to write clean code and some experience of the data science package landscape, for example numpy, pandas, matplotlib, etc.

Bonus points for:

  • You have experience working with Agile methodology such as Scrum or Kanban and familiarity with software development practices such as Continuous Integration, Behaviour- Driven Development and DevOps.
  • Experience of mathematical optimisation techniques, such as Bayesian hyperparameter optimisation or genetic algorithms, and Python packages such as GPyOpt, Spearmint and hyperopt.
  • Knowledge of healthcare patient-level data.
  • Knowledge of epidemiology / biostatistics, particularly analytical issues relating to studies of treatment effectiveness, disease progression, adherence, healthcare utilization, etc.
  • Work in bioinformatics.
  • Knowledge of healthcare / life science issues involving Real-World Evidence.
  • Experience with patient-level, longitudinal data.
