The following are responsibilities related to theResearch Specialist 1 position: 1. Understand and follow all SOPs and Quality Assurance Standards.

2. Read and understand technical requirements as stated in Animal Study Protocols (ASPs).

3. Effectively communicate animal and facility issues with animal care staff, co-workers, veterinary staff, supervisors, PI, and collaborators.

4. Understanding of basic animal behavior that can be applied to positive reinforcement training techniques.

5. Assist in the collection of on-going behavioral, experimental, and clinical data.

6. Monitor, track, and document behavior issues for the NIA colony and communicate potential options for treatment to NIA staff and DVR Behavior team

7. Responsible for implementing the primate enrichment program

8. Prepare and distribute individualized animal diets, enrichment, and clinical treatments.

9. Assess and document physiological data in anesthetized rhesus monkeys

10. Perform technical procedures as needed, including: blood collection, IV catheterization, aseptic technique, drug administration, TB testing, physical examinations, and radiographs.

11. Calculate drug dosages and administration

12. Safely and correctly handle and restrain anesthetized animals

13. Perform animal health surveillance checks and report any abnormal findings related to the animals or their environment.

14. Accurately maintain electronic medical records and update treatment plans.

15. Participate in study related necropsies and tissue harvest.

16. Perform weekly mid-day health checks and daily pm health checks of all animals in the NIA colony

17. Maintain laboratory equipment and procedure areas.

18. Responsible for daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning and sanitization

19. Compose daily emails communicating animal clinical and experimental information to Core and veterinary staff

20. Maintain and foster good working relationship with clients on daily basis.

21. Safely handle and dispose of hazardous waste. (eg. Package for autoclaving or incineration, arrange special pick-up for chemical/radiological waste, document use/disposal as directed).

22. Participate in all required trainings

23. Ability to lift heavy weights and spend long hours standing or walking

The following are minimum qualifications related to the Research Specialist 1position:

Education High school diploma or general education degree (GED). BS in Animal Science or related field or an AA in veterinary technology required. Experience: Minimum of three years’ experience working as a technician in an animal research environment to include technical procedures with NHP required. Certification/Licensure: In lieu of BS/AA, eligibility for LAT certification required.
