We are seeking a Veterinary Technician, Rodent Services for our Insourcing Solutions contract with Boston Children's Hospital located in Boston, MA.  Position includes a $2,000 Sign on Bonus!!!

 

Responsible for basic daily healthcare of laboratory animals in a research environment. Ensures that the health and welfare of laboratory animals are maintained in compliance with institutional, local, state and federal guidelines and regulations for Animal Resources Children’s Hospital (ARCH) facilities. Responsible for documentation of animal health and communicates with research staff. Assists and provides support to the facility animal health care program. Attention to detail when observing animals and completing documentation is necessary. 

 

The essential duties of the Veterinary Technician are:

  Reviews and complies with all policies pertaining to the animal care program. Cares for and maintains laboratory animals in accordance with USDA Animal Welfare Act and policies, the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” and other applicable regulations and policies. Works closely with the veterinarian(s) to perform daily health assessments of laboratory animals and maintains all records as needed and associated with this monitoring. Provides animal treatments according to standard operation procedures or otherwise as instructed by the veterinarian(s). Conducts routine inspection of assigned animal holding rooms to ensure the health and well-being of the animals and adherence to regulations, institutional policies, standard operating procedures Provides technical skills training to the research community in support of IACUC-approved research protocols, e.g. animal handling and restraint, weaning, tail snips, ear tagging, blood and other tissues sample collection, injections, treatments, surgical preparation, pre-, peri- and post-operative observations, and euthanasia. Coordinates and processes orders for animal medications (anesthetics, analgesics, antibiotics, etc.). Documents distribution of same, and provides guidance on recordkeeping requirements. Prepares and submits written reports, monthly billing summaries (drug orders, overcrowded cage charges), as requested by supervisor. Provides training for the ARCH staff as it relates to animal care, and health.  Operates equipment and uses supplies according to safety guidelines; performs general housekeeping and adheres to safety procedures. Complies with safety policies and procedures and MSDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances. Assists with the receipt, stocking and maintenance of supply inventories. Maintains required attendance levels and adheres to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.

 

The following are minimum qualifications related to the Veterinary Technician position:

•    Education:   Associate’s degree (A.A./A.S) in veterinary technology or  equivalent college level program.  Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in animal science preferred.

•    Experience:  Six months to 12 months rodent (primarily mice) care and handling experience as well as veterinary technical skills required. Basic knowledge of mouse (and rat if possible) technical skills, including handling, restraint, injection and phlebotomy techniques. Must be capable of identifying sick animals, and summarizing findings. 

•    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above. 

•    Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) or above OR successful achievement of ALAT certification within one (1) year required.  AALAS certification at the LAT level is preferred.  Veterinary Technician licensure of CVT or LVT is preferred.  

•    Other: Computer literacy in word processing and database record keeping preferred. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to effective professional communication and that contribute to a congenial work environment. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner with clients, customers, coworkers, and supervisors. Ability to work independently in a responsible manner and also serve as an effective team member. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
