Provides operational leadership across Explora, a Charles River Company, for West Coast OnDemand and OnSite locations and manages vivarium operations to maintain performance levels consistent with and according to company standards and client objectives. Provides cross-site consistency in vivarium management and operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

•    Operational oversight of multiple OnDemand and OnSite locations within assigned region (West Coast).

•    Responsible for personnel management activities

•    Serve as temporary backfill for Regional Vivarium Managers during leaves of absences, vacations, key personnel vacancies or new site startups as needed.

•    Participate in interactions with clients and prospective clients, through tours or meetings as required. Review service agreements or participate in client service activities as directed by the Director of Operations.

•    Partner to lead AAALAC Accreditations including PD review and updates. 

•    Plan, budget, and order approved capital equipment for operational sites.

•    Manage lists of site and equipment needs/improvements for all sites to assist the Director of Operations in budget management. 

•    Assist in the evaluation and implementation of new technology platforms to enhance operations and automation.

•    Assist with all vendor contracts/service agreements for operational services.

•    Responsible for ensuring appropriate SOPs are in place and reviewed pertaining to all sites. 

•    As required, respond, and facilitate the resolution of facility problems with clients, including, but not limited to the allocation of space, use of equipment and personnel, diagnosis of and control of disease.

•    As needed, assist Regional Vivarium Managers to ensure that assigned animal care staff maintain adequate care, feeding and delivery of animals; sanitation of the equipment and facilities; and the inventory, procurement, and storage of supplies at each site.

•    Periodically review staff and facility records, ensuring that detailed, accurate records and files are maintained as required by facility SOPs and policies.

•    Effectively operate the research facilities in a manner consistent with "the Guide" and all local, state, and federal requirements.

•    Ensure site staff operate and maintain equipment and supplies according to SOPs and all applicable safety guidelines. 

•    Perform purposeful presence walk throughs of sites and provide reports as to the condition of the facilities, quality, compliance, etc. to the Director of Operations throughout the year.

•    Develop processes to reduce waste and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

•    Periodically review site quality assurance procedures for monitoring of the effectiveness of facility sanitation, cage washing and autoclaving procedures (if applicable), monitoring of incoming animal shipments for container integrity, monitor the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), internal facility reports for monitoring deviations from pre-established parameters, and other quality assurance services (e.g., water cultures).

•    Comply with safety and security policies and procedures and MSDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

•    Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.

  Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Education:   Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in animal or laboratory science, business, or related discipline. 

•    Experience:  Minimum seven (7) years in a laboratory animal facility of which five (5) years is management or supervisory experience.  

•    Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) level preferred.

•    An equivalent combination of education, experience, and certifications may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
