  Job Summary Charles River is seeking an Animal Care Technician 1, for their contract in Cambridge, MA.  Position includes a $500 Sign on bonus.  The candidate will perform all aspects of animal husbandry required to maintain the highest standard of animal health and care.  The technician will execute husbandry tasks including basic animal checks, animal holding room checks, cage change activities, cleaning and sanitization of animal holding rooms, support of the enrichment and general animal health programs, and assistance in the monitoring of environmental conditions of critical support spaces; all according to company SOP’s and IACUC Guidelines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

•    Review, comprehend and comply with all SOPs and quality assurance standards pertaining to laboratory animals for research and to the research facility.

•    Monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations. 

•    Notifies Technologist or Attending Veterinarian of any animal observed to require additional attention

•    Perform animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include: perform daily water bottle /automatic water line and cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.

•    Prepare and submit required written records and electronic entries into Alexion’s Vivarium Management System.

•    Actively interact with Alexion staff as required to resolve requests, inquiries

•    Perform daily cage wash duties and sanitation.

•    Maintain animal holding rooms in a clean and organized manner in adherence to all SOP’s and IACUC Guidelines.

•    Maintain accurate records of animal breeding, health, and housing/isolator or support areas as required by Institute and facility. 

•    Assist with restraint, handling and manipulation of various animal species as assigned by the on-site Supervisor or facility veterinarian. 

•    Dispose of animal carcasses following established procedures

•    Dispose of waste materials in a safe and thorough manner as required.

•    Assists with the receipt, stocking and maintenance of supply inventory as needed..

•    Strictly follow all procedures necessary to maintain animal housing areas environments, including room or facility personnel entry and personnel protective equipment use.

•    Receive, inspect and put away incoming animals; ensure and provide for sentinel animals in each rodent housing area.

•    May be involved in strictly maintaining and following breeding and weaning procedures to ensure appropriate production levels.

•    Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines; performs general housekeeping and adheres to safety procedures.

•    Maintain consistent practice of general company and safety policies and procedures and MSDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances.  Performs all duties in compliance with local, state and federal requirements.

•    Maintain required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.

•    Sanitize, maintain and request repairs to caging materials, equipment, and instruments as needed.

 

  Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Education:  High school diploma, General Education Degree (G.E.D.) or equivalent required.  Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in animal or life sciences field preferred.

•    Experience:  Minimum of one year directly related laboratory animal experience in an AAALAC accredited facility.

•    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

•    Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certified as ALAT within 18 months of hire.

•    Other:  Proficiency with basic animal identification methods. Ability to effectively follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to effective communication and that contribute to a congenial work environment. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner with coworkers, research staff, and managers. Strong organization skills and attention to detail. Strong written and verbal English communication skills. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
