  Job Summary Charles River labs is seeking a Study Technician 1 to join their team in Cambridge, MA.  Position includes a $4,000 Sign on Bonus!!!  The candidate will observe, monitor and document the health and physical environment within the CRADL vivarium. Provide and support experimental surgical and/or technical procedures on rodents, including dose administration, sample collection, euthanasia, necropsy, anesthesia, surgical preparation, and recovery. Perform health assessments, analgesic management, and medical care under veterinary supervision. Provide training to both research staff and animal facility staff. Maintain procedure rooms with appropriate supplies and sanitize as necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

•    Reviews, comprehends and complies with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to laboratory animals for research.  Provide input into the creation/revision of SOPs and assist in implementation and training of new SOPs

•    Monitors daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations, animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include: perform daily water bottle /automatic water line and cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.

•    Perform technical functions required by research protocols and assist with dosing administrations; PO, SC, IM, IP, and IV.

•    Provide and assist with pre / post-op surgical monitoring.

•    Assists with restraint, handling, weighing and manipulation of rodents as requested by clients or assigned by the on-site Supervisor or facility veterinarian.

•    Perform veterinary technical support duties such as: sentinel sample collection and animal treatment under the guidance of a Veterinarian.

•    Provide technical skills training to the research community in support of IACUC-approved research protocols, e.g. animal handling and restraint, weaning, tail snips, ear tagging, blood and other tissues sample collection, injections, treatments, surgical preparation, pre-, peri-,  and post-operative observations, euthanasia, and assists with research procedures as directed.

•    Disposes of animal carcasses following established procedures.

•    Strictly follows all procedures necessary to maintain animal housing areas or isolator environments, including room or facility personnel entry and personnel protective equipment use.

•    Receives, inspects and house incoming animals; ensure and provide for sentinel animals in each rodent housing area.

•    Prepare and submit written reports, monthly billing summaries (e.g., service charges and shared procedure room charges) charts, logs and inventories as requested by supervisor. 

•    May be involved in strictly maintaining and following breeding and weaning procedures to ensure appropriate production levels.

•    Operates equipment and uses supplies according to safety guidelines; performs general housekeeping and adheres to safety procedures.  Complies with safety policies and procedures and MSDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances.

Maintains required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.

•    Actively interacts with research staff to provide technical assistance.

•    Operate glass wash equipment as needed.

  Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Education:  Bachelors Degree preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

•    Experience:  Minimum of two years directly related laboratory animal experience in an animal facility.

•    Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the Technician (LAT) level or higher. Veterinary Technician licensure of CVT or LVT is preferred.
