The Manager is responsible for leading the an Operational team within the Genetically Engineered Models and Services business.  This individual will participate in the development, implementation and achievement of short and long range objectives, policies, and budgets for the businesses. This individual will drive operational improvements, promote the harmonization of work procedures, generate a positive culture through employee engagement and ensure biosecurity. This individual will contribute to the development of global strategies in support of continuous growth.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist in the coordination and scheduling of activities of the department through hands-on technical support, delegation of responsibility and/or authority to departmental subordinates. Direct activities of assigned employees to ensure optimum performance and function including, but not limited to: hiring, promotions, training and development. Prepare and deliver salary and performance reviews; review and approve annual performance and salary reviews initiated by direct reports. Direct and monitor performance of direct reports. Provide regular coaching and counseling. Initiate appropriate root cause analysis and develop corrective action plans to achieve customer and department goals Maintain open communication with staff and address/resolve issues, concerns and suggestions. Increase competency of the GEMS workforce through appropriate training activities. Ensure adherence to biosecurity, animal care and welfare policies. Serve as a model to departmental subordinates as it relates to effective time management, communication and utilization of resources. Provide leadership and motivation to departmental personnel. Assist Project Management managers in strategic project planning and coordinating for multiple areas. Oversee all animal management activity (i.e., shipping, packing) as well as ensure all appropriate SOPs are followed. Ensure proper record-keeping and report preparation. Generate internal and external reports. Report to management on operations-related issues. Actively interact with and provide technical assistance to customers as required to resolve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints. Review customer complaints and participate in the development and implementation of any resulting procedural changes. Create and maintain complaint chart. Ensure that departmental equipment is maintained in good working condition and that departmental area(s) are maintained in a clean and orderly condition. Ensure proper recycling and setup of cages in assigned area(s). Review and ensure appropriate inventory levels of departmental supplies. May work on multi-site production projects. Provide training and mentoring to less-experienced supervisory personnel. In partnership with extended GEMS leadership, oversee local operations to meet sales and learnings goals. Monitor P&L to ensure optimal cost management and performance tracking. Participate in the implementation of synergies across Isolator Operations sites in North America to ensure “best practice” sharing, harmonization and R&D sharing including optimal technology transfer. Recommend and implement techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain state-of-the-art practices. Develop short and long term strategic and operating plans GEMS West to ensure satisfactory financial and operational performance. Represent the organization to industry groups, key customers, representatives of government and regulatory agencies and the general public. Interact with customers and other stakeholders when site visits are conducted. Other duties as assigned.

  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in life sciences or related discipline.  5+ years related supervisory experience in an animal production setting. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated computer skills (data input, word processing).

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced degree (Masters Degree, M.B.A ) in a related scientific or business discipline. LATG certification.
