Reviews, comprehends and complies with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area. 

Schedule technical procedures and assigns daily activities to personnel performing technical procedures.

Provides training and oversight to Laboratory Animal Technicians to monitor performance and accurate completion of tasks.

Provides leadership and feedback to staff. Monitors for technical requests and perform needed tasks to ensure completion of requests.

Works closely with Clinical Veterinarian(s) and Veterinary support staff to perform daily health assessments of lab animals in the colony.

Provides animal treatments as instructed by Clinical Veterinarian(s). Performs daily colony health examinations and clinical observations of sick animals.

Assists with maintaining Rodent Colony Health surveillance program and submission. 

Provides technical support (e.g. animal handling and restraint, weaning, tail snips, ear tagging, collect blood and other tissues samples, perform injections, treatments, surgical preparation and post-operative observations, timed mating, microinjection, and assist with research procedures as directed).

Familiarity with and ability to use various forms of anesthetic and the means of application, including Gas and Injectable.                                                         

Actively interacts with management, facility veterinarian(s) and investigators as required to solve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints and to provide technical assistance.

Provides environmental enrichment feed and other enrichment stimuli and/or provide behavioral assessments. As needed, performs animal husbandry and prepares and submits written reports, charts, logs and inventories as requested by Supervisor.

Assists with maintaining accurate records of animal importations, breeding, health, and housing/isolator or support areas.

Provides quality assurance to include animal health surveillance, monitoring of the effectiveness of facility sanitation, cage washing and autoclaving procedures, monitoring of incoming animal shipments for container integrity and animal health, monitor the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), internal facility reports for monitoring deviations from pre-established parameters, other quality assurance services as deemed necessary (e.g., sentinel and cull animal submission ) by the COR.

  Job Qualifications Education:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.  Achievement of an Associate of Arts degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent college level program is preferred.

Experience:  Minimum three years related animal care and handling experience and laboratory animal technician’s duties required. 

Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician level (LAT) or above required.
