The Veterinary Technician, under the direction of the veterinarian, will be responsible for the monitoring, documentation and triage of laboratory animal health cases (rodents). May also perform technical in-vivo procedures.

 

The Rodent Veterinary Technician will work within 3 client sites: Framingham, Cambridge, and Waltham.

 

The essential duties of the Rodent Veterinary Technician are:

  Assists in overseeing and maintaining quality performance of client objectives inclusive of: meeting/exceeding company standards with respect to animal health and welfare, facility and equipment condition, housekeeping, sanitation levels and environmental health, safety and security within the vivarium by compliance to state, federal and Cambridge Health department requirements as well as CRL quality assurance standards. Monitors daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health and clinical observations. Performs animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include: observation and provision of daily water bottle and feed; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols. Completes veterinary services activities for research animals inclusive of: performing dosing, injections, pre-operative animal procedures and post-operative animal monitoring, environmental and social housing assessment and provisions; assessment and paper and/or electronic recordkeeping of clinical observation and treatment with necessary communications with veterinary staff; regular clinical observation review and follow-up with veterinarian and response to emergency cases. Presents training on basic husbandry and technical procedures to staff.  Interacts with customers as required to solve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints and to be a technical resource for matters pertaining to the vivarium. Channels non-vivarium and significant concerns or issues to the Facility Supervisor or Project Manager for resolution. Participates in the development, revision, implementation and training of site-specific standard operating procedures (SOP's), in compliance with all state, federal and industry requirements. Oversee adherence to site SOP's and all required documentation related to department.   Assists in any contract related activity, as assigned by Project Manager.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

•    Education:  Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Science, Veterinary Technician or related field required or equivalent of Associates of Veterinary Technology with five years of directly related experience to the technical duties listed above.

•    Experience:  Four years in a laboratory animal facility, of which six to twelve months is facility organization and oversight and demonstration of training ability. Demonstrated successful experience in the breeding, care and husbandry of rodent laboratory animal models required.

•    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the requirements as listed above.

•    Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician level (LAT) is required. Veterinary Technician licensure of CVT or LVT is preferred.
