We are seeking a Senior Director of Business Development for our Research Models and Services (RMS) business ideally located in Illinois, Colorado, Missouri, or Kansas (other locations in the US Midwest may be considered). This is a field-based business development position working in collaboration with marketing, customer service, and technical services teams to develop and grow an assigned territory by increasing business with both established and new customers. The position will be focused on:

 

•    Building and maintaining cooperative relationships with new and existing customers in the assigned territory and team to optimize the conversion of new contacts, leads, and opportunities into sales for Research Models and Services for Charles River Labs.  The individual will be responsible for selling research models, genetically engineered models services, and diagnostic services into academic and the life science industries.

•    Work with both the inside business development, marketing, technical staff, and management team to increase market share in research models and support services in assigned territory and achieve or exceed territory revenue goals.

•    Prepare and provide accurate account forecasts for assigned accounts/territories throughout the year to track achievements versus goals.

•    Develop and qualify new business leads through frequent customer contact and prospecting.

•    Gather business intelligence and data on potential customers in the assigned geographic region.

•    Manage inquires and qualify all prospective opportunities. Identify the research models and services business at these accounts and effectively communicate the value proposition of the company’s products and services.  Manage all opportunities to close and provide client feedback on won and lost opportunities.

•    Prepare and implement a comprehensive territory management plan to indicate target opportunities, potential new accounts, expansion of existing accounts and an analysis of competitor accounts.

•    Collaborate with sales team members from other services lines to position Charles River products and services for cross-selling opportunities.  See these opportunities through appropriate hand-off.

•    Work closely with cross-functional stakeholders including but not limited to marketing, product management, project management, and operations in North American Research Models and Services.

•    Maintain accurate and timely updates to CRM database regarding activities, sales opportunities, sales stages, marketing statuses, and customer intelligence data (SalesForce.com).

•    This position requires in-person travel with customers when permitted (approximately 25% to 50%, additional travel could be needed at times but not to exceed 75%) domestic travel with overnight stays as needed.  Actual in-person travel may vary seasonally with client and territory demands.  Currently in-person travel is limited by COVID-19 impact, expectations for travel will be adjusted according to corporate and client COVID-19 responses.  Job Qualifications  

•    Education:  Bachelor’s degree (B.A. /B.S.) or equivalent in life sciences, sales or related discipline.  Advanced degree (Masters, Ph.D., MBA or other advanced professional degrees) would be considered an advantage for any candidate.  

•    Experience:  3 to 5 years’ experience selling consumables or services in a B2B setting, preferably in the life science industry.  Experience in selling research tools or services in the academic and/or contract research industries would be considered an advantage for any candidate.  Prior laboratory or other in vivo research experience would be considered an advantage.

•    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

•    Certification/Licensure:  Valid driver’s license required.

•    Other:  Excellent communication and presentation skills.  Proficient in the use of standard office computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, e-mail).
