Linux/Unix

Job Overview

Drives overall direction for the organization's Linux/Unix technical infrastructure. Broad technical understanding across multiple technology layers as well as deep technical knowledge of large-scale distributed systems and Linux/Unix operating systems. Addresses items such as systems integration, compatibility across multiple platforms with a focus on the Linux and Unix environment underlying operating systems.

Responsibilities

  • Manages large multi-national team with responsibility for 6000+ servers.
  • Configures, installs, maintains and upgrades Linux and Unix computer systems hardware and software.
  • Manages through subordinate managers, project managers, and applications specialists the Linux/Unix platform from an automation, security/patching and asset management perspective for planning, control, and operational purposes.
  • Collaborates with architects and the Cloud Ops teams among others to drive innovation and guidance during project discovery and architectural phases.
  • Supported systems may include all versions of Linux and Unix running as standalone or in virtualized environments running VMWare.
  • Servers supported also include containerized apps such as Docker, Kubernetes and Mesosphere clustering.
  • Supports large Hadoop (Cloudera) infrastructure.
  • Employs ITIL concepts and knowledge of the Agile methodology.
  • Mentor and develop team members with the newer technologies.
  • Proactively help to identify and resolve difficult technical issues.
  • Assist in preparing budget for area of responsibility.

Requirements

  • Broad management skills to lead teams, as well as the ability to influence others outside of own job area regarding policies, procedures, and goals.
  • Ability to handle changing priorities and to use good judgement when working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Expert knowledge of all Linux and Unix operating systems.
  • Knowledge of SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) disciplines.
  • Expertise in Git, Jenkins, Foreman, Puppet, Ansible, Bash scripting and other open source applications. 
  • Knowledge of Hadoop eco system like YARN, Hive, Impala, Spark2.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new technology. 
  • Great teamwork, strong written and verbal communication and collaboration skills.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent experience.             
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience with Linux environments.                     
  • Five (5) years of management experience.  Multi-national team a plus.
