Research Support Specialist- Rodent Behavioral and Physiological Phenotyping Technician Reviews, comprehends, and complies with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific areas. Complies with safety policies, procedures and SDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards, radioactive substances, and strong magnetic fields and radio waves. Provides technical and husbandry support for rodents. Supports and assists in research protocols and works independently of day-to-day oversight. Interfaces with research staff to assist with logistics and scheduling of project requirements. May be required to join laboratory staff meetings. Conducts research and laboratory support services as directed. Research support includes handling large, aged rats gently and calmly; tail bleeding rats, collecting vaginal cytology samples, and performing necropsies; conducting behavioral phenotyping to assess locomotor, cognitive, sensory, and emotional function e.g., water maze, gait analysis, and operant tasks; anesthesia and MRI. Research Support Specialist- Rodent Behavioral and Physiological Phenotyping Technician Laboratory support services include processing blood, use of a Keyence microscope, and biospecimen preparation, storage, and maintenance. Maintains an accurate research tracking system and database for research activities. Keeps accurate records of daily experiments and results. Ensures that cages are labeled correctly with information regarding strain or lineage, sex, and research use. Updates cage cards as necessary. Reports cage space, caging, and environmental concerns to the PM. Assists with the supervision of specialized care of animals including preparation of special diets and medicated water, care of immature, aged and special animals. Research Support Specialist- Rodent Behavioral and Physiological Phenotyping Technician Reports animal health concerns to the Attending Veterinarian and Laboratory staff. Administers drugs or treatments to animals as directed. Ensures that proper veterinary care and treatment for animals is maintained and records are documented completely. Completes all applicable facility logs and spreadsheets. Provides animal identification, e.g., ear notching, tail tattoo or transponder, as indicated. May be required to perform IP, IM., ID, and SQ injections; oral gavage; submandibular, eye, and cardiac bleeds; full body perfusion and dissection. May be required to become proficient at performing surgical services such as jugular, carotid, or femoral vessel cannulation; CSF collection; and stereotaxic intracranial procedures. Maintains required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed. Conducts animal work without the use of perfumed products i.e. soap, lotion, shampoo, laundry detergent, etc. as these may have a negative impact on the behavioral research. The following are minimum qualifications related to the Research Support Specialist  position:  Education:   HS diploma or GED equivalency required. Experience/Certification:   1-year experience with research animals + LAT certification OR Bachelor of Science in Animal Science or similar + 3 years of experience working with research animals OR 10-13 years of experience working with research animals.
