Freelance Translators/Linguists, Linguistic Validation

Requirements

• Native fluency in target language – spoken and written

• Fluency in source language(s) – spoken and written

• Able to recruit participant groups within a timely manner(either with general population participants or participants with any condition)

• Prior experience/comfortable with cognitive debriefing interviews

It is not essential for LVCs/interviewers to have had CD interviewing experience before; we are able to provide training materialand interviewing workshops. However, they would need to be comfortable in recruiting participants and carrying out the interviews, all within the project timelines. Depending on project methodology, LVCs/interviewers would have 1 to 5 weeks recruitment time.

LVC Role

Requirements

• Native fluency in target language – spoken and written

• Fluency in source language(s) – spoken and written

• Meet at least one of the following:

• a university degree in translation (in some countries may be referred to by a different name such as linguistic studies or language studies) or equivalent (if the course includes translation training);

• a university degree in any other field from an institution of higher education plus two years of full-time professional translation experience;

• five years of full-time professional translation experience.

• Able to recruit participant groups within a timely manner(either with general population participants or participants with any condition)

• Prior experience/comfortable with cognitive debriefing interviews

• Experience with translation management systems and CAT tools is a must

• Prior experience as a Linguistic Validation Consultant is desirable, yet not essential

Testing

Multiple test files can be sent to the LVC to determine linguistic suitability, and ability to discuss and resolve issues surrounding conceptual and cultural equivalence in the target country:

• Translation test;

• Translation reconciliation test;

• BT review and discussion test;

• CD review and discussion test.

LVC Categories

It is best to have several categories of LVCs:

• Category 1: LVCs whoare able tocarry out a full LV FT/adaptation process without CD;

• Category 2: LVCs whoare able tocarry out a full LV FT/adaptation process and are comfortable recruiting and interviewing participants of the general population only;

• Category 3: LVCs whoare able tocarry out a full LV FT/adaptation process and are comfortable recruiting and interviewing participants of the general population and participants with any indication.
