Job Summary We are seeking a Veterinary Technician 1 for our Insourcing Solutions site in Poolesville, MD. This position offers a $1,000 Signing Bonus

 

The responsibilities related to the Veterinary Technician 1 are:

•    Prepare and distribute individualized animal diets, enrichment, and clinical treatments to study animals according to protocols. 

•    Collect and record physiological data.

•    Perform technical procedures including: femoral blood collection, IV catheterization, aseptic tissue collection and processing, euthanasia, anesthesia, food or liquid consumption, drug administration (Topical, PO, IM, SQ, IV and ID), TB testing, weighing, physical examinations, restraint and handling of animals, radiographs, and other technical procedures as needed. 

•    Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation and procedure.

•    Understand basic animal behavior that can be used for training techniques; including positive reinforcement training and cognitive testing 

•    Assist in the collection of on-going behavioral testing and data collection  

•    Assist veterinarian or investigators with surgeries or specialized procedures.

•    Perform animal health surveillance checks. 

•    Accurately maintain electronic medical records and update treatment plans.

•    Collect, preserve, and prepare blood, urine, stool, and tissue samples.

•    Participate in study related necropsies and tissue harvest.

•    Responsible for daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning and sanitization of LARC 8 prep areas, and procedure rooms

•    Set-up procedure area and prepare supplies and equipment for experimental procedures

•    Ability to maintain freezer organization tasks and maintain sample inventory.

•    Effectively communicate any animal issues to veterinary staff and investigative staff.

•    Safely handle and dispose of hazardous waste. (e.g. Package for autoclaving or incineration, arrange special pick-up for chemical/radiological waste, document use/disposal as directed).

•    Participate in all required trainings (topics may include animal specific information and technical procedures, medical care, OSHA, regulatory, ASP support, and standard operating procedures).

•    Performs other tasks as assigned.

 

The following are minimum qualifications for the Veterinary Technician 1 position:

•    Education High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. BS in animal science, biology or related OR AA degree in Veterinary Technology preferred.

•    Experience: 2-3 years’ experience working with animals in biomedical research, of which1 year must be with NHPs. Veterinary Hospital experience will be considered. 

•    Certification/Licensure: Eligible to take LAT  

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
