Cold Therapy Effects on Quadriceps Muscle Function: A Comparative Study of Cold Packs vs. Cold Sprays
This clinical trial investigates the immediate effects of two common cryotherapy methods—cold pack application and cold spray—on quadriceps muscle function in healthy young males. The study aims to provide evidence-based insights for sports medicine professionals managing acute muscle injuries in return-to-play scenarios.
Study Design: This randomized, double-blind trial will compare muscle properties, strength, and activity changes following cryotherapy application. Fifty-two healthy male volunteers aged 18-25 will be randomly assigned to either cold pack or cold spray intervention groups.
Intervention Protocols:
- Cold pack group: 10-minute application of 0-5°C cold packs with cloth barrier
- Cold spray group: 5-10 second application of vapocoolant spray from 20cm distance
Primary Measurements:
- Muscle mechanical properties using MyotonPRO device
- Isometric strength via dynamometer at 60° knee extension
- EMG activity through surface electrodes on quadriceps
Secondary Outcome: Pressure pain threshold assessment using digital algometer
Measurements will be taken at baseline, immediately post-application, and at 3-minute and 5-minute intervals. The study excludes individuals with cold sensitivity or neuromuscular conditions to ensure safety and data reliability.
This research by Okan University will provide valuable clinical data on cryotherapy's acute effects on muscle function, potentially influencing return-to-play decisions in sports medicine. The comparative design offers practical insights for clinicians choosing between these common treatment modalities.
