Home-Based Wearable Therapy for Overactive Bladder: A Clinical Trial Investigating a Smart Patch System
This clinical trial is investigating an innovative wearable device called the Confidanz Smart Patch System for managing overactive bladder (OAB) and urinary incontinence symptoms. The study is specifically designed for patients who have been diagnosed with idiopathic overactive bladder by qualified specialists. This means the condition has no identifiable underlying cause, which is common in many OAB cases.
The trial is particularly significant because it offers a home-based treatment approach, allowing participants to administer their therapy through a mobile application while under clinical supervision. This represents a major advancement in bladder management, as traditional treatments often require frequent clinic visits that can be inconvenient and time-consuming for patients. The wearable microneedle system works by delivering percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation, a therapy that has shown promise in regulating bladder function through neurological pathways.
Participants in this randomized, single-blinded study will be assigned to either the active treatment group or a sham control group in a 3:1 ratio. Those in the treatment arm will receive actual nerve stimulation, while the control group will use identical equipment without active stimulation. This careful study design helps researchers determine whether any improvements are truly due to the treatment itself rather than placebo effects. The trial will enroll up to 40 adult participants who will undergo 12 weeks of weekly treatments, each consisting of a 30-minute stimulation session.
Safety monitoring is a crucial aspect of this investigation, with researchers carefully tracking any adverse events throughout the study period. Participants will complete comprehensive assessments including 3-day bladder diaries, standardized questionnaires about their incontinence symptoms, quality of life measures, and pain scales.
