SENSE Study: Evaluating the Sentio Bone Conduction Hearing System
This clinical study, known as the SENSE trial, is an important observational research program designed to evaluate the Sentio transcutaneous bone conduction hearing system in real-world clinical practice. The study will follow 100 patients of all ages (children, adults, and older adults) who receive this innovative hearing device as part of their standard medical care.
The Sentio system represents a significant advancement in hearing technology for people with various types of hearing loss, including conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss, and single-sided deafness. Unlike traditional hearing aids that amplify sound through the ear canal, this device works by transmitting sound vibrations directly through the bone to the inner ear, bypassing damaged portions of the hearing pathway. This approach can be particularly beneficial for individuals who cannot use conventional hearing aids due to ear canal issues, chronic infections, or specific types of hearing impairment.
Researchers will carefully monitor patients over an extended period—potentially up to 10 years—to assess both the immediate and long-term outcomes of using the Sentio system. The primary goal is to determine how successfully patients can use the device in their daily lives, which includes both the surgical implantation process and how satisfied they are with the device's performance after they begin using it regularly. Patient satisfaction will be measured through detailed questionnaires specifically designed for this hearing technology.
Additionally, the study will examine several important secondary outcomes that matter greatly to patients and their families. These include monitoring any surgical complications during the implantation procedure, tracking post-operative recovery issues, documenting the different surgical techniques used by various clinicians, and recording how quickly patients can begin using their device after surgery. The research team will also evaluate hearing improvement by measuring free-field thresholds, which assess how well patients can detect sounds in different environments.
What makes this study particularly valuable is its focus on real-world clinical practice rather than a controlled laboratory setting. This means the findings will directly reflect the experiences of typical patients receiving care through their regular healthcare providers. The study includes patients who have already scheduled or undergone Sentio implantation in normal clinical practice, making the results highly relevant to future patients considering this treatment option.
