Eating Behaviour and Snack Consumption Patterns Among Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

The goal of this observational study is to learn about the effect of eating behavior and snack consumption patterns among children with ADHD. The main question it aims to answer is:

Does snack consumption increase insidenc and severity of ADHD?? Participants will answer survey questions about their eating behavior and snack consumption patterns.

To investigate how beverage and snack consumption patterns and child eating behaviours differ between children with ADHD and matched healthy controls and explore the association between these patterns and ADHD status among children attending Sohag University Hospital.

Study Population

Cases: All eligible children (total coverage) aged 6-12 years attending Child Psychiatry/Pediatrics clinic and diagnosed with ADHD during the study period

Controls: ADHD free children attending outpatient/general pediatric clinic , matched to cases by age and sex in a 2:1 control: case ratio

Description

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age 6-12 years.
  • Met the diagnostic criteria for ADHD by the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5); and severity assessment by Conners Rating Scale (parent form)
  • For controls: negative ADHD assessment using DSM 5 clinical interview and Conners scale; no history of ADHD diagnosis

Exclusion Criteria:

  • ADHD symptoms due to other neurodevelopmental, psychotic, mood or organic disorders, or medication effects
  • Known neurological disease, severe chronic illness, or special diet that may alter intake
  • Use of psychotropic or appetite altering medications for ≥3 months
  • Refusal to participate

is a 35-item assessing eating style in children. Eating style is assessed on eight scales: food responsiveness (4 items), enjoyment of food (4 items), emotional overeating (4 items), desire to drink (3 items), satiety responsiveness (5 items), slowness in eating (4 items), and emotional undereating (4 items), and fussiness (7 items).
