Epidemiological and Statistical Study of Facial Traumatic Fractures Among Patients Presenting to the Trauma Hospital of Assiut University Hospitals During the Period From Jan 2025 to Dec 2028

Facial traumatic fractures represent a significant global and regional health burden that can impair essential functions such as breathing, speaking, and chewing, while carrying substantial functional and psychological consequences. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the epidemiological characteristics, causes, anatomical patterns, and clinical outcomes of facial traumatic fractures among patients presenting to the Trauma Hospital of Assiut University Hospitals between January 2025 and December 2028.

In this observational study, researchers will systematically extract and review data from emergency admission records, hospital registries, and radiological archives. The collected data will include participant demographics (such as age, sex, residence, and occupation), the primary mechanism of trauma (such as road traffic accidents, falls, and assaults), the use of protective gear (such as seatbelts and helmets), and time intervals before hospital presentation. Imaging studies, including computed tomography (CT) and plain radiographs, will be analyzed to record the specific fracture sites, laterality, and injury complexity.

The study will also document concomitant injuries across other body systems, the treatment modalities administered (conservative management versus surgical fixation), post-treatment complications, and length of hospital stay. The findings will help characterize current trauma trends in Upper Egypt to inform injury prevention strategies and assist in hospital resource allocation for maxillofacial trauma care.

Study Population

All male and female patients of any age presenting with radiologically confirmed facial traumatic fractures (involving the frontal, nasal, naso-orbito-ethmoid, orbital, zygomatic, maxillary, or mandibular bones) admitted to the Trauma Hospital at the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit of the General Surgery Department, Faculty of Medicine, Assiut University Hospitals, between January 2025 and December 2028.

Description

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients of any age and either sex.
  • Radiologically confirmed diagnosis of a facial traumatic fracture involving the frontal, nasal, naso-orbito-ethmoid (NOE), orbital, zygomatic, maxillary, and/or mandibular bones.
  • Presentation or admission to the Trauma Hospital of Assiut University Hospitals during the specified study period (January 2025 to December 2028).

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Isolated facial soft-tissue injuries without an underlying bone fracture.
  • Patients who died prior to radiological confirmation of the fracture.

Patients with Facial Traumatic Fractures
Patients of all ages and both sexes presenting to the Trauma Hospital of Assiut University Hospitals with radiologically confirmed facial traumatic fractures (including frontal, nasal, naso-orbito-ethmoid, orbital, zygomatic, maxillary, and mandibular bones) between January 2025 and December 2028. Participants receive standard-of-care trauma management, categorized as conservative (non-operative) therapy or surgical intervention (closed reduction, maxillomandibular fixation [MMF], or open reduction and internal fixation [ORIF]), with data evaluated for epidemiological characteristics, fracture patterns, etiology, associated injuries, and clinical outcomes.
