Description
Inclusion Criteria:
Be a current resident at Cornwall Manor in the independent living unit Understand English Be literate to 5th grade level and up Ages 60+ years old Self report that they do not have a diagnosis of heart failure, dialysis, end stage renal failure and/or Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone secretion (SIADH) Have the ability to drink thin liquids Be their own legal guardian
Exclusion Criteria:
Individuals with a diagnosis of heart failure, dialysis, end-stage renal failure and/or Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone secretion (SIADH) will be excluded. This is due to increasing water intake with participants with these conditions could be potentially harmful or life threatening.

Experimental: Thirst for Knowledge
|
The intervention consists of a total of 4 educational sessions.
At the first educational session, the topics that will be covered will be the prevalence of dehydration in older adults and the biological reasons why dehydration affects older adults more than younger adults.
Subsequent sessions will cover the following topics: the signs and symptoms of dehydration are and how to look for them within yourself and others, benefits of water, different drinks, why water is the most hydrating drink, the recommended amount of water to consume, how to calculate the water intake based on your weight, helpful tips and tricks that can be used to increase water intake.
In addition to the educational sessions, there will be weekly hydration happy hours held at Cornwall Manor.
The hydration happy hour will include a recipe book for different hydrating drink mixtures, and flavor combinations, and cups of different hydrating drinks for the participants to try.

What is the study measuring?
Primary Outcome Measures
Outcome Measure |
Measure Description |
Time Frame |
|---|---|---|
|
Knowledge Test
Time Frame: Participants will take this assessment before the start of the education session and at the end of their last session.
|
A pre-and post-test, is an eleven question knowledge test that includes three true or false, seven multiple choice and one select all that apply questions.
The various types of questions are used in order to challenge the short term memory, long term memory of the participants.
The pre- and post-test knowledge test was adapted from the version of the Keller et al., 2024 questionnaire.
The questions will be scored a 1 if the answer was correct, 0 if the answer was incorrect and for the select all that apply partial credit will be given .25 for each correct answer selected.
The questionnaire will generate quantitative data, the amount of correct and incorrect answers and will be divided by 11, the total number of questions in order to gain a percentage.
The percentages will be compared from the pre-test to the post-test in order to see if there is any change.
|
Participants will take this assessment before the start of the education session and at the end of their last session.
|
|
Water Intake Log
Time Frame: The participants will complete the water intake log for three days before the first education session and three days after the last education session.
|
The water intake log will be used in order to gather quantitative data on the amount of water the participants consume throughout the day and when they completed the log.
The water intake log, is an eight question intake log that includes seven questions and one check box question.
The water intake log was adapted from the version of the Nakamura et al., 2020 fluid consumption log and Suntory Global Innovation Center Ltd.
Research Institute.
The water intake log includes a structured 5 point Likert scale the participants will use to answer the seven questions by circling the number 0-4 that corresponds with the number of glasses of water they drank at the corresponding time.
At the bottom of the water intake log there is one check box question that gives insight to how the participant completed the log.
|
The participants will complete the water intake log for three days before the first education session and three days after the last education session.
|
|
Client Satisfaction Questionnaire-8
Time Frame: This will be given at the final education session.
|
The Client Satisfaction Questionnaire-8 (CSQ-8), is a standardized eight question assessment that uses a four point Likert scale for the participants to answer the questions based on the corresponding number.
The questions using the Likert scale will gather quantitative data about satisfaction.
Four additional questions using the four point Likert scale will be added to the CSQ-8 in order to gather further data on satisfaction.
The additional questions have been adapted to match the format used in the CSQ-8.
Three of the additional questions are on four point Likert scales and one questions a multiple choice question.
This will gather the quantitative data of the satisfaction of the participants.
|
This will be given at the final education session.
|
|
Program Attendance
Time Frame: This will be completed twice a week while the program is running during the education session and the hydration happy hour.
|
Program attendance will be taken at each session to determine if it is feasible for member to attend the educational sessions as well as the hydration happy hour.
|
This will be completed twice a week while the program is running during the education session and the hydration happy hour.
