Assessment of Knowledge Regarding Inborn Errors of Immunity Among Pediatric Physicians in Assiut: A Cross-Sectional Study

This cross-sectional study aims to assess the level of knowledge regarding inborn errors of immunity among pediatric physicians working in Assiut Governorate, Egypt.

Study Overview

Status

Detailed Description

Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) are heterogeneous disorders that can present with recurrent, severe, or unusual infections, autoimmunity, and other manifestations. Early recognition by pediatric physicians is important for timely diagnosis and management.

This observational study will use a self-administered electronic questionnaire to assess knowledge of clinical warning signs, general and specific signs of IEI, and treatment and immunization strategies among pediatric physicians in Assiut.

What is the study measuring?

Primary Outcome Measures

Outcome Measure
Measure Description
Time Frame
Overall knowledge score regarding inborn errors of immunity
Time Frame: Baseline

Mean percentage score of correct answers on the knowledge questionnaire regarding inborn errors of immunity (maximum score expressed as percentage) Score ranges from 0 to 100%, with higher scores indicating better knowledge.

Baseline

Secondary Outcome Measures

Outcome Measure
Measure Description
Time Frame
Domain-Specific Knowledge Scores
Time Frame: Baseline

Separate percentage scores for four domains: 1) Warning signs in children (4 questions) and adults (2 questions), 2) General signs of IEI (5 questions), 3) Specific signs of IEI (9 questions), 4) Treatment strategies and immunization (5 questions) Score ranges from 0 to 100%, with higher scores indicating better knowledge.

Baseline
Knowledge scores according to professional and educational characteristics
Time Frame: Baseline

Mean overall knowledge scores stratified by years of experience, educational level, hospital affiliation type, previous training in pediatric immunology, and daily case flow.Score ranges from 0 to 100%, with higher scores indicating better knowledge.

Baseline
Mean knowledge scores by hospital
Time Frame: Baseline

Comparison of mean overall knowledge scores across participating hospitals in Assiut Governorate to identify hospitals with greatest knowledge gaps requiring priority targeted educational and training activities. Interpreted in relation to number of participating physicians per hospital.Score ranges from 0 to 100%, with higher scores indicating better knowledge.
