Effects of Plyometric Training on Blood Lactate and Oxygen Saturation During Recovery in Adolescent Muay Thai Athletes
The Effect of Plyometric Training Integrated Into Muay Thai Training on Blood Lactate and Oxygen Saturation During the Recovery Process
This study examined whether adding eight weeks of plyometric training, including jumping exercises, to regular Muay Thai training affected blood lactate levels and blood oxygen saturation during recovery after a Muay Thai bout. Twenty male adolescent athletes were randomly assigned to two groups. One group completed additional plyometric training, while the other continued regular Muay Thai training alone. Blood lactate and oxygen saturation were measured at 5 and 20 minutes after the bout, both before and after the eight-week training period. Changes were compared between the two groups.

Experimental: Plyometric Training Group
articipants (n=10) completed 16 plyometric training sessions over eight weeks, with two sessions per week, in addition to their regular Muay Thai training. |
Participants in the experimental group completed 16 plyometric training sessions over eight weeks, with two sessions per week, in addition to their regular Muay Thai training. The program included 15 stations comprising rope skipping; single-leg jumps with and without arm use; forward single- and double-leg jumps; hexagonal jumping drills; lateral jumps over an obstacle; long jumps with changes of direction; jumps onto and down from a box; forward jumps over cones; alternating-leg upward jumps; tuck jumps; and double-leg jumps with and without arm use. Rope-skipping duration was 5 minutes in weeks 1-2, 10 minutes in weeks 3-4, 15 minutes in weeks 5-6, and 20 minutes in weeks 7-8. At stations 2-15, training volume progressed across these corresponding two-week periods from 1 set of 10 repetitions to 2 sets of 10 repetitions, 3 sets of 10 repetitions, and 3 sets of 15 repetitions. Rest intervals were 30 seconds between sets and 1-1.5 minutes between stations. |

No Intervention: Regular Muay Thai Training Group
Participants continued their regular Muay Thai training for eight weeks without additional plyometric training (n=10). |

Measure Description |
Time Frame |
|---|---|---|
|
Change in Blood Lactate Concentration During Recovery After a Muay Thai Bout
Time Frame: Baseline and after 8 weeks; at 5 and 20 minutes of recovery after the standardized Muay Thai bout at each assessment.
|
Blood lactate concentration (mmol/L) was measured using a Lactate Scout analyzer with capillary blood samples collected from the earlobe at 5 and 20 minutes of recovery after a standardized Muay Thai bout consisting of three 2-minute rounds separated by 1-minute rest periods. Measurements were performed before and after the eight-week training period to assess changes in both groups. |
Baseline and after 8 weeks; at 5 and 20 minutes of recovery after the standardized Muay Thai bout at each assessment.

|
Change in Peripheral Oxygen Saturation During Recovery After a Muay Thai Bout
Time Frame: Baseline and after 8 weeks; at 5 and 20 minutes of recovery after the standardized Muay Thai bout at each assessment.
|
Peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2, %) was measured using a pulse oximeter at 5 and 20 minutes of recovery after a standardized Muay Thai bout consisting of three 2-minute rounds separated by 1-minute rest periods. Measurements were performed before and after the eight-week training period to assess changes in both groups. |
Baseline and after 8 weeks; at 5 and 20 minutes of recovery after the standardized Muay Thai bout at each assessment.

Plan for Individual participant data (IPD)
Plan to Share Individual Participant Data (IPD)?
IPD Plan Description
De-identified individual participant data underlying the reported blood lactate and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) results, including group allocation and measurements obtained before and after the eight-week training period at 5 and 20 minutes of recovery, will be made available to researchers upon reasonable request to the principal investigator.
IPD Sharing Time Frame
Data and supporting documents will be available from the date of publication of the study results and for five years thereafter.
IPD Sharing Access Criteria
Researchers may request de-identified individual participant data, the study protocol, the statistical analysis plan, and a blank informed consent form by emailing the principal investigator at hgenc@bingol.edu.tr. Requests should describe the research purpose and proposed analysis and will be reviewed by the principal investigator.
