Criterio di inclusione:

Diagnosi di AS da moderata a grave con precedente evidenza radiologica documentata (radiografia) che soddisfi i criteri New York modificati per AS (1984)
Avere AS attivo definito come Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) ≥4 e il punteggio del dolore spinale (mal di schiena) ≥4 su una scala di valutazione numerica (NRS)
I partecipanti avrebbero dovuto assumere farmaci antinfiammatori non steroidei (FANS) con una risposta inadeguata
I partecipanti che assumono regolarmente FANS o inibitori della cicloossigenasi-2 (COX-2) come parte della loro terapia AS devono assumere una dose stabile
I partecipanti che hanno assunto un inibitore del fattore di necrosi tumorale alfa (TNF) (non più di uno) devono aver avuto una risposta inadeguata
La durata totale della terapia precedente (FANS e/o terapia fisica adeguata) deve essere di almeno 12 settimane
