April 2, 2026 updated by: Elif Gur Kabul, Pamukkale University
The aim of this study is to identify predictors of climate change health literacy in older adults.

Detailed Description

The study will include at least 159 elderly individuals aged 65 and over. Assessments will be conducted via face-to-face interviews. After recording the demographic information of the participants, cognitive functions will be assessed using the Hodkinson Mental Test, climate change health literacy using the Climate Change Health Literacy Scale, anxiety level using the Climate Change Anxiety Scale, physical activity level using the Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity, dyspnea level using the Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale, and mental fatigue using the Mental Fatigue Scale. Assessments are planned to be completed in approximately 15-20 minutes.

Primary Outcome Measures

Outcome Measure
Measure Description
Time Frame
Hodkinson Mental Test
Time Frame: 5 minutes
The test consists of 10 questions in total. A high score indicates a proficiency in cognitive problems.
5 minutes
Climate Change Health Literacy Scale
Time Frame: 10 minutes
The scale consists of 24 questions. The lowest possible score is 24, and the highest possible score is 120.
10 minutes
Climate Change Anxiety Scale
Time Frame: 8 minutes
It consists of 22 questions and a 4-factor structure. A higher score on this scale indicates increased concern about climate change.
8 minutes
Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity
Time Frame: 5 minutes
It consists of 9 items and is answered with "yes" or "no". It is divided into two parts. The first part assesses aerobic capacity. The second part assesses muscle strength and flexibility.
5 minutes

Secondary Outcome Measures

Outcome Measure
Measure Description
Time Frame
Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale
Time Frame: 5 minutes
It consists of five points. The patient rates respiratory distress on a scale of 0 (no shortness of breath) to 4 (shortness of breath during activities such as being homebound and dressing).
5 minutes
Mental Fatigue Scale
Time Frame: 10 minutes
The survey consists of 15 questions in total, and the scoring is obtained by summing the scores from the first 14 questions. The last question is evaluated as yes or no. Based on the total score, it is classified as follows: 0 - 10 = no mental fatigue problem, 10.5 - 14.5 = mild mental fatigue, 15 - 20 = quite severe mental fatigue, ≥ 20.5 = severe mental fatigue.
