Ambulantní pacienti muži nebo ženy ve věku 18 let a více
Pacienti s diagnózou esenciální hypertenze 1. nebo 2. stupně
Normální nálezy fyzikálního vyšetření, výsledky elektrokardiogramu (EKG) a rentgen hrudníku; nebo abnormální nálezy, které zkoušející považuje za klinicky nevýznamné

Kritéria vyloučení:

Sekundární hypertenze nebo těžká hypertenze
Klinicky významné kardiovaskulární onemocnění nebo srdeční selhání
Klinicky významné respirační onemocnění, které by zakazovalo použití betablokátoru
Lékařská kontraindikace přerušení současné antihypertenzní léčby
Diabetes mellitus 1. typu v anamnéze
