Inklusjonskriterier:
- Mannlige eller kvinnelige polikliniske pasienter i alderen 18 år eller eldre
- Pasienter diagnostisert med stadium 1 eller stadium 2 essensiell hypertensjon
- Normale fysiske undersøkelsesfunn, elektrokardiogram (EKG) resultater og røntgen av thorax; eller unormale funn vurdert av etterforskeren til å være ikke klinisk signifikante
Ekskluderingskriterier:
- Sekundær hypertensjon eller alvorlig hypertensjon
- Klinisk signifikant kardiovaskulær sykdom eller hjertesvikt
- Klinisk signifikant luftveissykdom som ville forby bruken av en betablokker
- En medisinsk kontraindikasjon for å seponere en pågående antihypertensiv behandling
- Historie om type 1 diabetes mellitus
- Historie med alvorlig psykisk sykdom bortsett fra mild depresjon
