Inklusionskriterier:

Manliga eller kvinnliga öppenvårdspatienter i åldern 18 år eller äldre
Patienter som diagnostiserats med essentiell hypertoni i steg 1 eller steg 2
Normala fysiska undersökningsfynd, elektrokardiogram (EKG) resultat och lungröntgen; eller onormala fynd som utredaren bedömer som inte kliniskt signifikanta

Exklusions kriterier:

Sekundär hypertoni eller svår hypertoni
Kliniskt signifikant kardiovaskulär sjukdom eller hjärtsvikt
Kliniskt signifikant luftvägssjukdom som skulle förbjuda användningen av en betablockerare
En medicinsk kontraindikation för att avbryta en pågående antihypertensiv behandling
Historik av typ 1-diabetes mellitus
Historik med svår psykisk ohälsa förutom mild depression
