Group/Division Summary

This position is within the Analytical Instruments Group, the Materials and Structural Analysis Division, within the Life Sciences Electron Microscopy business unit. Established in 2016, The Cambridge CryoEM Pharmaceutical Consortium brings together 5 pharma companies, the University of Cambridge, the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC-LMB) and Thermo Fisher Scientists to create a collaborative space to explore and promote the utilization of CryoEM in Drug Discovery. Thermo Fisher wants to further expand the team in Cambridge with a Senior Applications Scientist to accommodate the increase in industrial demand for CryoEM.

Position Summary

As an Applications Scientist, you will work closely with the Pharma Members of the Consortium to implement innovative single particle analysis workflow strategies to successfully deliver structures of challenging proteins and protein complexes. Your work will be an important contributor to enabling development of new therapeutics!

Responsibilities

As an expert in cryoEM and protein structure determination, you will provide guidance on biochemical and sample preparation strategies to optimize sample, sample screening, high resolution data collection, interpretation of images, and demonstrate advanced methods for SPA image processing. Supporting pharmaceutical companies with sample processing on state of the art hardware - Titan Krios with the latest cameras and data processing setup - also involves close interaction with the MRC-LMB, the University of Cambridge, and Thermo Fisher applications, service and R&D teams.

Tasks for this role include:

  • Vitrification of samples, preparation and loading of samples into Krios.
  • Training of Consortium members on any aspect of SPA where requested.
  • Sample screening and analysis of images to establish optimal sample preparation (and providing guidance on sample preparation options to overcome potential artefacts).
  • High resolution data collection using EPU
  • Maintenance and monitoring of system performance
  • Troubleshooting software and hardware issues
  • Supporting activities to ensure the best quality results, and a highly productive operation

The Requirements

The successful candidate will need to be customer centric and possess the following combination of education and experience:

  • Advanced degree (PhD) in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Biophysics or Structural Biology with strong background demonstrating expertise in critical microscopy application areas
  • Extensive background in high-end electron-microscopy in an advanced research (academia or industry) environment
  • Experience interacting with customers, service team members, and R&D colleagues
  • Capacity to work independently as well as in teams
  • Confident and resolved
  • Strong communicative and inter-cultural skills (verbal and non-verbal)

The position will be based in Cambridge UK with up to 10% travel (UK/International).
