The Staff Scientist role is in the Life Sciences Mass Spectrometry business unit, part of the Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Division, and located in San Jose, CA. At this site, we offer customers a complete range of high-end analytical instruments and software services that support customers within proteomics, clinical research, forensic toxicology, pharmaceutical, biotech, food safety, and environmental market segments.

This role will contribute to the design and development of technologies critical to supporting Thermo Fisher Scientific’s position as the leader in mass spectrometry.

What will you do?

You will combine extensive knowledge of core sciences like ion physics and chemistry with computer programming for embedded systems and .Net applications. The ability to effectively communicate and work in a diverse environment with scientists, software developers and chemists is paramount to success in this role.Develop software for instrument control system of mass spectrometry instruments using a combination of Lua, Python, C++, and C#.The control system includes controlling various devices, and peripherals to run scans and modify the control parameters based on the data set obtained.Design and implement algorithms and software control services for prototyping of new functions and ideas.Develop procedures for calibration and tuning of various control elements in a mass spectrometer, like ion optic lenses, quadrupoles, and ion traps, including mathematical and statistical modeling.Bring-up code/systems in lab and test software builds. Work closely with research scientists to implement and participate in patentable ideas.Advances the group’s capability by in-depth research, innovation, and continuous improvement.Work with external academic collaborators Work with field support in solving and reproducing customer issues, when required.

How will you get here?EducationMaster's degree or a PhD in scientific fields like Mass Spectrometry, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering.Experience• Minimum of 2 years relevant experience working with instrumentation, medical or analytical instruments either in industry or in an academic lab as a post-Doctoral fellow.• Strong scientific and software development skills to design, implement, verify, and deploy complex mass spectrometry and chromatography instruments and systems.• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to review and evaluate writing of others.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities• Data structures and basic computing algorithms including sorting and searching.• Excellent programming knows how with C++ and or C#.• Knowledge of scripting languages like Python or Lua.• Experience with Mass spectrometry is desired.• Experience working in an FDA regulated development environment desired.• Works well in a team setting.• Be agile with changing environments and execute tasks timely.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $129,400.00–$194,050.00.

This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy. We offer a comprehensive Total Rewards package that our U.S. colleagues and their families can count on, which includes:
