Job Summary

We are looking for a Research Specialist/Behaviorist II to join our Insourcing Solutions team, located in Hamilton, MT.

What you will do! As a Research Specialist/Behaviorist II, you will use existing regulations and standards while working closely with the veterinary, technical, and animal care staff to ensure proper animal care standards are maintained. You will research and review current literature regarding animal behavior and environmental enrichment, and use it to develop, revise, and implement current and future behavior related plans; as well as train animal care staff and other personnel in various animal behavior and enrichment techniques. You will supervise other technicians/specialists in the performance of activities involving behavior management, and you will develop and implement strategies for behavioral improvements to experimental manipulation.

In the Research Specialist/Behaviorist II role, you will maintain and track data related to social housing, exemptions from social housing and abnormal behavior; in addition to the design, development, and/or evaluation of enrichment techniques, devices, and strategies for enhancing captive environments. You will need to organize, distribute, and maintain inventory of enrichment materials, devices, and equipment; ensure availability of appropriate enrichment to the animals’ structural and social environments; and provide opportunities for species-typical activities. You will perform behavioral observations, temperament testing and/or compatibility assessments to aid in the socialization program; as well as determine potential social partners, complete social introductions, monitor progress, and make decisions regarding outcomes of introductions. You will also serve as the point of contact for the reporting of behavioral abnormalities/concerns; perform behavioral assessments in response to reports; consult with veterinary staff to keep them informed of reports; and develop, implement, document and track intervention practices/plans for reported behavioral abnormalities/concerns.

Job Qualifications

Who are we looking for?A candidate that possesses a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences required; Master’s in animal behavior or related field recommended. At least two years’ experience both managing and supervising a laboratory animal behavior program, as well as management of NHP behavior management, required.

The pay for this position is $32.50 USD per hour (negotiable).
