How will you make an impact?

The EHS Manager is a partner of the Operations Leadership Team and the Functional Managers at Thermo Fisher, The World Leader in Serving Science. The EHS Manager will report to the Sr. Manager of Practical Process Improvement and will have a team of EHS Specialists to continue to drive a Safety-First culture at the Lenexa, Kansas site.

What will you do?

  • Provide leadership and oversight of EHS and Sustainability programs in a fast-paced, cross-functional and highly collaborative work environment.
  • Develop and implement a strategy to systematically control and reduce site safety hazards and environmental impact (energy, non-hazardous and hazardous waste, air, water, land).
  • Drive the EHS Roadmap for the site to ensure compliance and a proactive approach and be accountable for the results of the EHS Scorecard for the site.
  • Manage the EHS Calendar to ensure regulatory compliance for the site with multiple agency permits.
  • Perform evacuation drills to prepare site, and provide incident command during site emergencies.
  • Apply continuous improvement tools (Kaizen, Gemba, 5 Whys, VSM, Poka Yoke, etc.) to drive the progress of EHS and Sustainability programs.  Engage site functions and prioritize initiatives to improve productivity.
  • Reinforce and sustain a safety-first culture through involvement and innovation with site leadership and operational teams.
  • Drive favorable key performance indicators and use data to steer EHS strategy.
  • Implement all elements of the corporate global EHS management system to develop and refine EHS programs and processes to meet the changing needs of the business.
  • Provide technical expertise to address site EHS-related hazards (chemical, biological, physical, etc.).
  • Collaborate with internal Global EHS network and regulatory agencies on EHS matters to ensure compliance and optimal performance.
  • Own site EHS budget and find/implement opportunities for savings.
  • Serve as site lead in site EHS regulatory and internal compliance audits.
  • Ensure readiness and compliance of the Emergency Action Plan (ERP) as needed, to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and corporate standards. This includes training, conducting drills, and coordination with the local authorities.
  • Maintain the Hazard Communication Plan for a chemical packaging and storage facility.
  • Manage the team of EHS Specialists and Security Team.
  • Lead the Colleague EHS Committee to empower individuals to own safety and sustainability.
  • Ensure proper incident investigations and ensure root cause countermeasures are identified to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
  • Perform periodic audits to identify potential EHS hazards, program deficiencies, and liabilities and coordinate the closure of gaps identified.
  • Lead and participate in job safety and ergonomics analysis, make recommendations, and work with the appropriate department to implement changes when necessary.
  • Maintain EHS database and records, including OSHA log, and generate reports as needed.
  • Liaise with Travelers on Workers’ compensation cases. Also, work closely with medical providers on managing injury/illness cases.
  • Work with project teams and ensure established safety standards are met while implementing new projects.

How will you get here?

      Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, or related scientific disciplines such as Biology, Chemistry, or Engineering.

      Preferred Qualifications

  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Certification.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP).

      Experience

  • 5+ years in a safety or environmental health and safety (EHS) role.
  • 3+ years in people management roles.
  • Experience in implementing local, state, and federal environmental, health, and safety procedures and regulations, including OSHA, EPA, etc.
  • Self-directed leader with a proven ability to manage/influence across and up into the organization without direct reporting responsibility.
