Capella Scientia Study: Evaluating Advanced Eye Measurement Technology for Cataract Patients
The Capella Scientia (SCDX) Development Study is an important international research project investigating advanced eye measurement technologies for patients with cataracts. This observational study will evaluate the performance of several state-of-the-art diagnostic devices across four distinct patient groups in India, Spain, and the Philippines.
About the Study: This prospective, noninterventional trial will enroll approximately 400 adult participants divided into four groups: 1) those previously implanted with Alcon intraocular lenses (IOLs), 2) those scheduled for monofocal IOL implantation, 3) those with previous refractive surgery needing IOLs, and 4) patients with keratoconus (a progressive cornea disorder). The study aims to collect valuable biometric data using three cutting-edge devices: the Unity DX with SMARTCataract DX system, IOLMaster 700, and Argos with Alcon Image Guidance.
Why This Research Matters: Cataract surgery has become one of the most common and successful medical procedures worldwide, with millions performed annually. However, precise eye measurements remain crucial for optimal visual outcomes. This study will help determine whether these advanced diagnostic tools can provide more accurate measurements, particularly for patients with special circumstances like previous eye surgery or corneal disorders. Better measurement technology could lead to improved lens selection and ultimately better vision after cataract surgery.
Patient Participation: Eligible participants must be able to understand and sign consent forms, attend required study visits, and meet age requirements (adults and older adults). The study excludes women of child-bearing potential and individuals with certain eye conditions that might interfere with measurements. During visits, participants will undergo non-invasive eye exams using the study devices, with no additional risks beyond standard clinical care.
Study Timeline and Locations: The research begins in June 2025 and is expected to conclude by February 2027 across multiple clinical sites. For participants in Groups 2 and 3, the study involves preoperative assessments and postoperative follow-ups between 30-100 days after surgery. The primary outcome being measured is the Manifest Refraction Spherical Equivalent (MRSE), which helps determine the eye's focusing power.
