Multicenter, randomized study with 58 classes divided into two groups (class receiving Earth of Joy versus class having lessons as usual). Assessments were made before and after the intervention using self-questionnaires.

Study Population

The study population consists of children aged 7 to 11 years enrolled in French elementary schools (equivalent to U.S. Grades 2 to 5), and their teachers. Only classes with teachers who have not previously used the Earth of Joy program are eligible. Mixed-grade classrooms (Grade 3/4 or 4/5) are accepted.

Description

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Volunteer teachers who have not yet experienced Earth of Joy in the classroom
  • Teachers of students in Grade 4. Mixed-grade classrooms are also eligible, including Grade 3/4 and Grade 4/5 combinations
  • Children aged between 7 and 11
  • Children able to read French

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Refusal of parents or child

Earth of Joy
26 classes of children aged 7 to 11 years whose teachers will implement the Earth of Joy pedagogical program for 10 weeks. The program includes classroom activities focused on joy, empathy, and well-being. Assessments will be conducted before and after the intervention
Control
26 classes of children aged 7 to 11 years whose teachers will continue regular classroom activities without implementing the Terre de Joie program. Assessments will be conducted at the same time points as the intervention group.

Change in children's school well-being (BES-C scale)
Time Frame: September 2025 and December 2025
Children's well-being at school will be assessed using the Be-Scol scale. The scale will be administered before and after the Earth of Joy intervention. The primary outcome is the change in Be-Scol scores between baseline and post-intervention.

Empathy will be assessed using the BES-C scale (Bensalah et al., 2015), a validated tool for measuring empathy in children. The scale will be administered before and after the intervention.

Change in bullying behaviors
Time Frame: September 2025 and December 2025
Bullying will be assessed using a self-report questionnaire based on the Éduscol framework. The questionnaire will be completed by children before and after the intervention.

Teachers' mental well-being will be assessed using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale, before and after the intervention.

Teachers will complete a questionnaire assessing classroom climate and cohesion using Likert scale. The questionnaire will be administered before and after the intervention.
