Charles River Discovery are excited to be recruiting for a Principal Animal Technician to join our Portishead, Bristol site on a permanent basis.

The Principal Animal Technician will play a leading part within team that conducts a wide range of in vivo efficacy testing models. You'll be hands on, working on a variety of client projects whilst working to ensure the team within the unit are trained on certain techniques and demonstrating best practice. This is an exciting time to join our team as we are expanding on our offering of disease models. This is a hands on, site based role, candidates must be able to travel to the Portishead, Bristol site daily. 

What you’ll be doing: •    Supporting other technicians in ensuring a high level of animal care at all times, putting the animal's welfare first throughout the process. •    Administering drugs (through a variety of routes) and blood sampling with due care and attention. •    Taking the lead in carrying out surgical techniques as needed, again, in adherence to the strictest regulations. •    Maintaining highly accurate records at all times, being a person within the unit that can help escalate any problems and manage day to day issues effectively.  •    Work closely with other Scientists', Managers' and Project Leaders' on projects to ensure models are viable.  •    Providing additional technical expertise to be able to strengthen the capabilities within the team and expand the services offered to our clients.   •    Adhere to all health and safety protocols appropriately and to report any quality issues immediately.

Skills and Experience: •   Relevant Higher Qualification in Animal Welfare or similar •   Holder of Home Office License; with experience of working with rodents essential.  •   Previous Project Licence Holder or NACWO would be preferred, but not essential  •   Significant hands on experience of working within a similar in vivo focused environment and on different disease models is also essential for this grade.  •   Proven husbandry experience, able to care for and handle animals under SPF conditions  •   Strong attention to detail with excellent communication skills •   Demonstrable problem solving skills, able to adapt quickly and apply logic to make sound, rational decisions.  •   Passion for animal welfare with a desire to maintain and enforce high standards at all times.  •   Excellent time management skills, able to prioritise tasks as needed and work closely with management to ensure proper care is always delivered to all models onsite.
