Position Summary:

We are currently seeking a Staff Engineer who will play a crucial role in driving innovation through the utilization of both established and innovative single-use technologies. In this position, you will be responsible for assisting customers with their requests for customized products by engaging in activities such as conceptualization, research, design, and evaluation. The day-to-day responsibilities of this role encompass a wide range of design inputs, both in the upstream and downstream processes. The engineer will work diligently to support the new product development team by generating application-specific qualification data and ensuring that all new products meet the functional requirements for their intended use.

Responsibilities:

Collaborate extensively with colleagues to develop comprehensive experiment plans, implement studies, and analyze and effectively communicate the results and recommendations through various communication channels, both verbal and written. Apply advanced engineering analysis and modeling techniques, such as heat and mass transfer, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), surface chemistry, and biological networks, to evaluate the performance of different components and systems. Play a crucial role in technology transfer, ensuring a seamless transition from research to the development phase. Enforce to the Product Commercialization Process (PCP) to ensure efficient and effective product launches. Take the lead in coordinating, assisting, or conducting process characterization and validation studies, both internally and in collaboration with external partners. Provide valuable support in problem-solving efforts and actively contribute to continuous process and product improvements. Maintain meticulous documentation of experimental results and concepts to strengthen the organization's patent and intellectual property portfolio. Collaborate closely with customers and field representatives to explore innovative product and process concepts, including participation in alpha and beta testing. Be prepared to travel as vital to fulfill job responsibilities.

Initiate, and implements:

  • Lead a small team of skilled engineers to accomplish goals and objectives
  • Will work with outside engineering vendors and manufactures to complete encouraged results.
  • Present high level system design ideas to a large team
  • Always looking to the future for the next challenge that the team will need to address
  • Assigning priority to multiple high priority activities
  • Work with project management in the following areas:
  • High level schedules
  • leading and mentoring team members
  • Phase gate requirements
  • Product requirements
  • Lead and direct to develop a vision with management for the R&D team.
  • Documentation of standard methodologies and processes
  • Apply expertise to guide tactical and strategic decisions for the business
  • Build a network within Thermo Fisher to efficiently accomplish tasks. This network will extend both directions to other specialists and to senior management, and across multiple sites.
  • Identify systemic problems within the organization and build and implement answers to these problems.
  • Implement your shown experience to drive system level design, testing and integration.
  • Be willing to travel up to 25%

Education

BS Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or other similarly appropriate field with 8 years’ experience

Advanced degree with 6 years with master’s degree and PhD 2 years of meaningful experience

Experience

Plastics design experience and processing knowledge for the following: injection molding, extrusion, blow/cast films, and plastic welding

Hardware, equipment, or machine build design experience with welding, Stainless steel manufacturing techniques etc.

Experience in medical device, biopharma, or cell/gene therapy industries

Ability to cover multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail

Self-motivated and willing to take clear ownership of work

Proficiency with CAD software, preferably SolidWorks, CSWA or CSWP certified

Ability to connect with other specialists across departments, both verbally and written

Ability and experience in planning, writing, executing, and documenting test plans and reports

Ability to deliver work assignments quickly, autonomously and with outstanding quality

Experience and proficiency at working in an interdisciplinary team and work environment

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of PDM workflows and how they impact day to day workflows.
  • Able to engage and train new manufacturers.
  • Must engage and facilitate relationships with new and existing vendors.
  • Affinity with working in a high-tech environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Diligent and accurate while maintaining a vision of the end result.
  • Should have a previous network established with 3rd party manufacturers within the BioPharma industry.
  • Work efficiently with remote teams and leverage current technology to accomplish the tasks at hand.
  • Recognized as a technical or functional authority within the business unit.
